NY chicken lover!!!!

Evening all.

Cass--did you find your sumatras??? I hope so because that owl will keep coming back.

Adoravachick--silkies has special mind powers that will make you do whatever they want. I know this because I am owned...ahem own...10 of them. They pretty much get whatever they want.

Kamir--dont be too hasty about eating those chickens. After you eat that first egg, you will be wanting more. Egg salad from fresh eggs is the bomb!

So the rir boys are getting randy and the girls are avoiding them as much as possible. However, I did see a potential candidate to stay as he was doing his job in getting everyone into the coop tonight. He has been doing this the last couple of nights so he get points in his favor to not go to freezer camp. This flock has got to be the chattiest group I have ever encountered. They yak all day long and if you go out there, they yak your ears off while you are working! My hens dont talk that much! I guess rir are chatty by nature. Anyone else have chatty rir's?

The lone silkie chick is doing well and my daughter and the cat were socializing with it today while I was at work. Abby (the cat) would like to mommy it I think as she lays on the chair next to the brooder box and peeks in if it chirps. I guess she was rubbing her head on the chick when my daughter had it upstairs playing with it. My dd only likes them when they are in the cute mini-yeti fluffball stage. After that she refuses to have anything to do with them. My silkie hens are no longer broody so they wont take the chick. Sigh. I hope this one is a pullet at least.

Ginny--going for the last (and probably most painful) test on thursday to confirm or deny gallbladder. I am betting confirm. 4 hours and I know what they do as I went through all of this last year with my 18 year old daughter before she had hers out. This one will be the most painful. Hoping to get this all finished so I can actually eat without fear again. Its a great weight loss program, if you are into pain!!!

So true about the silkies! I am thinking of hatching one more time to get some blues and blacks.
I too have a RIR hen. "Red" is SUPER chatty and as nosey as can be. My EE roo is pretty social too, my husband had some friends over to sit around and smoke cigars in the back yard and there is Oreo standing there hanging with the boys. Very cool birds.

Some of my Sumantras walked into the coop tonight. I shut the door quickly. 2 of them are still out there somewhere, but they are not roosting where the Owl can pick them off. And here I had this great plan to elevate their evening meal slowly on different things until they had to go into their own special coop to eat. Yeah. Are chickens like "God"? Screwing with your plans all the the time?

My lav Ameruacanas are laying in their new coop. They protested for 2 days LOUDLY about their confinement, but they have NO FEATHERS on their backs and need to be kept away from then roos...esp right now, since the big side has FIVE Roos in it. 3 are headed to freezer camp a couple of days before my vacation. I am saving the eggs to set under Thing 1on the 10th, so they hatch a few days after we get back.

My chicken sitter is already going to be dealing with chicks hatching the day I leave (LOL) and a rooster that has balance problems and can't turn himself over if he gets on his back while dustbathing. (I have to go in the run to turn him over , then he is fine. Good thing Ray raised the roof, literally, on the run)

Welcome to all the newbies on the thread.

Cass I'm glad most of your Sumatra's have returned and are safe in the coop.

Egg salad - I love egg salad...

Gallbladder...I remember when my then 18 year old daughter had hers removed...poor thing was doubled over with pain...praying for your situation!

Since last Saturday's escape by one of the Dellies, I've covered the pen with window screening, but it's a pain to remove it when necessary. So yesterday I cut up a large cardboard box and now have a pen with 24 inch high sides...they'll not get out of that too soon...yeah, right. This morning I found one of the Dellies perched on top of one of the feeders, eyeing the top of the pen, which I've now covered with the screening, LOL. These girls don't give up.

At this rate, I'm running out of room for them. Where do I put them until they're feathered enough to move outside to the coop? They'll be 2 weeks old tomorrow.
Looking for advice from you "been there, done that" chicken lovers.

Look up on the old timer's thread and they have alot of great information. (sorry, browser won't let me link it here) With the 90+ degree heat we been having, you don't have to worry about them getting cold.
The title for the old timer's thread starts out: "Chickens for 10-20 years or more?" So you may be able to search. It is not for those easily offended, but is a great resource of information. I've only made it to page 200 so far.

My first chicks lived in a giant Newfounland sized dog crate for a long time, even outside, until their coop was habitable. When it was their outdoor home I covered it with a blue tarp. I made sure there weren't pictures of these accommodations, not wanting a visit from CPS -- chicken protective services. They were quite fond of their place, though.
