Okay, so I walked up on my 14 wk old rooster trying to mate with my 5 month old Partridge silkie hen....I said "dude, seriously?" This hen normally treats him like a little punk because she's the head honcho...I just rolled my eyes and walked off just disgusted.

Yesterday as I was refilling water I heard squawking behind the pine tree, which is normally someone was just told to move out of the way. When the squawking continued, I walked over to see Harry the EE running off and one of the NH pullets squatting on the ground. So either she was squatting in submission or somebody just mated. The Orps are the biggest birds out there, so figured it was out of submission because they couldn't possibly be old enough to start. Counted the weeks on the calender just now, they would be around 16 weeks.

Guess we better build those nest boxes this weekend! As a temp measure, I may just toss a spare litter box out there to get her started!
Today is little mini-me's 2nd birthday, had her party yesterday, so now our weekends are not filled with planning and massive cleaning of the house - time to get back to our projects!
Out of my Morrisville chicks, I have 1 EE pullet, 3 EE roos, 1 GLW pullet (with straight comb), 2 GLW roos and the 2 NH girls. From the chicks Tab and Trav delivered, 1 Black Orp roo, 1 black orp hen, 1 blue orp hen, 1 australorp hen, 2 ancona roos, 2 ancona girls, 1 pretty EE girl. Too many roos in the hen-house. Already thinking who can stay and who needs to go so I can replace with more hens. The 2 GLW roos are the bullies and look the meatiest, so they make the top of the list. The black orp roo seems to be a good boy so far. The EE roos are undecided, as it would be fun to play with colors, but the one has crooked toes, Harry is fuzz faced but a weenie, and the third was getting bullish with the girls until black orp roo moved in. One of the Ancona roos get a free pass, because he is my buddy.

It's crazy how boys will be boys. I did forget to mention the size dfference between the two birds. A bantam silkie hen and a EE roo. I just posted a for sale notice for my EE trio and my RIR at my local feed store. The are sweet birds, but my daughter wants bantams only because she can hold them and walk around with them easily.

I collected my first egg today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My partridge Rock girl gave me an beautiful creamy/off white egg today! I caught it minutes after she did it, as I was saying hello this afternoon. I had just put up their outdoor pen after getting them, their coop and their pen yesterday, and voila, there was a beautiful egg waiting for me in the coop, as if by magic!

I think I'm going to like this egg/chicken business! :)

I'll bet that was a thrill.
What do people do with their first egg?

I don't think I'll see an egg until October or as late as December, depending from whose website one gets info. And if the December time frame is correct, then probably not until Spring 2013.

Hmmm...maybe I'll eat these chickens...

Congratulations! The first egg is always special. I got my first egg (\from the bird who is now my head hen, my Dominique Miss Thing. I carried that egg like it was made of glass, took photos of it in a little basket and put them up on Facebook and BYC, and then cooked and ate it with great ceremony. Nowadays I just carry them up in my shirt or old plastic bags or whatever I have lying around.
