MJ's little flock

I think so! They're very happy little things. Confidence is growing all the time.

An hour ago, I had Hilda on my right shoulder like a little black parrot softly chattering into my ear, Martha on my left knee, and Nancy on my right knee with Nelly! I was very surprised when Nelly jumped up, she doesn't like being touched and nor does she like touching me. I guess the knee doesn't count?
Yes! You are an acceptable roost. No better compliment.

There are quite a few poops under the heat plate this morning. Seems it had some use overnight.

The neightbours left a sunflower head on my front porch for the hens, which was very kind of them. Unfortunately, the hens don't know what to do with it! I've been pulling the seeds out for them and trying to show them where the seeds come from, but so far they haven't caught on.

I had to teach mine as well. Somehow they know to eat them but not where they come from.

This evening, Katie and Peggy were thinking about the sunflower seeds. I'm sure Katie pecked a few from the flower, but I'm not sure if I had already loosened those seeds or if she had.

If a kind of food you give is unfamiliar to the chickens, they just taste it and don’t eat with enthusiasm. They want to try if it’s safe to digest.
You’ll see they do eat more of it the next day if the food is good.

I had such a thing with soaked, boiled and partly burned split peas a few days ago. The split peas were meant for a soup. But became a treat for the chickens.
