NY chicken lover!!!!

Talked it over with my wife and we wanted to try to incubate some eggs and hatch some chicks. Was wondering if anybody in the Rome/Utica area has some eggs I can try out. Don't really want to spend a bunch of money ordering eggs and mess something up.

Would even be willing to do "pick of the litter" if someone wants.

Hello:

Since I am such a newbie with chickens, I wanted to know if this is "normal" chicken behavior...

Yesterday afternoon, the heat wave finally broke down here in the Allegany County, with a HUGE rainstorm...BUCKETS AND BUCKETS AND BUCKETS! TOTAL DELUGE!
I look out of the kitchen window, and there are all 15 of my chickens just STANDING in this outrageous downpour--complete with thunder, lightning and extremely strong winds!
They could have gone into their coop at anytime.....

Is this normal?

Yes, mine are doing it right now! They hate to be hosed down but are willing to stand out in the rain. Go figure. It must feel good to them after all this oppressive heat. I have read other posts saying the same thing. Crazy chickens!!! We are getting some much needed rain now in Ulster county. Its pouring out but we'll take it!

too bad I am not close to you, I would love to have you incubate some wyandotte eggs!

BTW, I wondered, does anyone know if you can expect a hens 1st eggs to be fertile? or is there a period in which the eggs are developing that would inhibit fertilization?
Also, once the eggs are refridgerated I would assume they are no longer hatchable right? would you have to keep them somewhat incubated right away?

I know, should post that on hatching eggs, but I just was thinking about that.

Funny thing, my chickens HATE the rain, no matter how hot. They stood in the warm coop to avoid the rain yesterday. I thought it felt good. My wyandottes were out a little when it wasn't downpouring though. Even my young chickens that have a covered run went into their coop, I had to show them that they were not gonna get wet and then they came out.
silly birds

anyone local want to go in on a bottle of eprinex pour on with me? I really can't afford to spend $40 on dewormer and don't have enough birds to even need 250ml's. That would likely expire before I could use a small portion of it. Would feel better spending $20. anyone?

Ha ha! I always found it funny that my chickens didn't have the sense to come in out of the rain. (Though I can certianly understand wanting to cool off yesterday after such oppressive heat!) Luckily, I have a 9 year old daughter who is patient enough with me to explain things I don't catch on my own.

When it rains is the best time to catch worms!!!

Rachel- I don't know where I'm pulling this from, but I THINK eggs can be kept at room temperature for up to 2 weeks before they are incubated. Just don't refrigerate.

I'm having chicken dreams now on a regular basis. Does anyone else dream about chickens?

my DH and I both had a night last week where we BOTH dreamt that our chickens were out. I was saying how I dreamt that the chickens were out of the fence and had spread the garden all over the place, then he laughs and said he had the same dream except the garden wasn't all messed up.

Just wanted to say hello, I have found this website very helpful and entertaining. I live between Rochester and Syracuse, on a farm, we also raise Black Angus cows. The chickens were a way to get the kids more involved in the farming, I however feel in love with them and have to admit they are my girls

I am interested in finding some local Jersey Giants, I have had a craigslist post for a couple of months now, but have not got any replies. Any one know of any I would be interested in a couple. Otherwise I am planning on waiting for the Wayne county fair, and NYS fair to see if I can find someone willing to sell.

Thanks and keep cool this week

How far are you from the Bloomfield/Canandaigua area? I have eggs for 8.00 a dozen if you're close enough to PU? (I can ship too) I have squat for eggs at the moment now, but hopefully they'll start back up this week. And you can have the Quail eggs, I've just started feeding them back to the hens now!

I did loose one Ameracauna hen to the heat, the darned things just will not take turns in the boxes, plus two of them are Broody, so ya know how that goes! It was touch and go on one other hen and a Polish, but I think they're going to be okay now. Thankfully everything else weathered the sweltering weather fine.

My Buff Silkie broody though looks like she has an impacted crop though.

She hatched all but one egg I put under her, so thats a shame.

Fingers crossed for me, my first batch of eggs in my new Genesis bator are due to hatch soon (Errr, I forgot to write down what date I set them or the batch in the other bator!

I have the Monroe County fair next week, if anyone is coming stop by and say 'Hi', I'm the rabbit/cavy super so I'll be there all week. I was going to go to the Bridgeport auction, but darn, its conflicting with the fair! I wanted to PU my Silkie Roo, guess I'll need to see if someone is going who can snag him for me...

are there gonna be any chickens at the monroe county fair? if so, I might actually go, otherwise I prefer the livingston county fair. More redneck stuff to do there (and it's free to see the tractor pulls and Demo derby) I really was mad when I went to the monroe co fair and they want you to pay more to see the demos? kinda crappy.
