NY chicken lover!!!!

I agree Hen. It is important (Rancher), especially for your grandaughter, that her doctor is aware of the situation so he/she can decide if they should have a preventative course of antibiotics. Meningitis in any form is nothing to fool around with.

Lapeerian--if they were my roos, I would have had a bar b que already! Good luck with them. I hope you have sentenced them to long prison terms!

Cass--sounds like your little hen has a thing for your dh. Maybe he can get her to drink. I hope she makes it.

Stoney--Those are some beautiful birds! You got some amazing bloodlines when you got them. I just finished reading an interesting book about the breed. The Rhode Island Red--History, Breeding, Management, Exhibition and Judging by George Scott. It is an old book, published back in the 40"s maybe? by the Secretary/club judge of the British Rhode Island Red Club. Its free and very interesting. My reds are from a hatchery so they wont look as nice as yours but I do have at least one roo and several hens that fit the breed standard pretty closely as far as shape, structure and coloring so who knows? As long as they lay eggs, its all good!

Stay cool everyone!
I also have 3 hatchery RIR's. They look pretty much the same but are much smaller birds. And my hatchery reds at 1 year old have been laying fantastic since late last November. And Thanks! You have asked and so have others if my reds are mean. Not even close to it. They even allow Mama Reds little ones to live with them in the coop. And they are only 4 weeks old without their mother to protect them and all is fine. I like my reds.

Eglu has been put back into use...as a rooster pen. Past two days the flock hasn't been outside like usual, just hanging in the coop. All because the EE duo are guarding the coop. Anyone that ventures out gets chased. Had the big Orp roo pinned between the wire and tree that it is wrapped around. The duo spends the all day walking around outside, then go in to chase the NH girl out for a little fun. And it is not just one breeding, it is multiple times. Poor girl just can't get away. Of course the third EE roo has stepped up to the breeding plate this morning, but at least the flock is going outside again. I know the separation won't 'fix' the EE duo's problems, but it relieves the flock of two pests. And makes me feel better that they aren't trapped in the coop all day.

just moved my cockerels to a different pen also. They need to grow a little more before they go to freezer camp. Besides the young girls need a little break!!

Oh good! Mine have all been very nice, except for a couple of roos who like to grab me. Are the roos fairly mellow too? I find half the girls arent real keen on being handled and the other half want to either sit on my lap or perch on my shoulder and have lengthy chat sessions. I call it chicken therapy. The two grabby roos are on the top of the freezer camp list. I do pick them up when they do that, which totally freaks them out, and dont put them down till they submit. We have been letting a few come out and freerange at night and they seem to stay around pretty good. Of course, that could be because my laying hens come over and chase them a bit to let them know who owns the real estate here! Anyways, I have a long list of egg buyers so am looking forward to when they start laying.

My last group of RIR's (hatchery) was pretty mellow - I had one in the group that would boss the others around and even act like a roo now and then..

Funny thing is, now I have one RIR (hatched here) pullet in a different coop that is doing the same thing! (jumping on the other hens and pretending she's mating). And before you ask, no, she is NOT a roo - she is 7+ months old and is laying an egg a day. There's a cockerel in that coop that has FINALLY figured out his gender so maybe he'll put her in line LOL. But other than that odd behavior she is a nice girl.

Speaking of the roo in that coop - he's kinda figured out what to do but his MO is to try and jump the ladies when they are dustbathing. It's pretty amusing - he'll keep circling the sand hole and giving the occasional peck before just trying it out and getting chased off. :p

I don't have any RIR roo's.

I have 2 potential RIR broody's. If they commit to sit I am contemplating getting some fertile RIR hatching eggs for them. All my free range roo's are Sumatra.

these are from a closed chicken farm. Same flock bred for 50 or 60 years. They are big girls that lay eggs the size of my Pekin duck eggs. True jumbo's. mostly 3 to 4 years old and still laying well.

Truth be told they are hams for the camera. They see it and walk up to and on my feet. Stand there looking at me.

Well they are very nice and there is nothing like the old lines IMO. I can't say where my Dels came from but they lay the largest eggs of all my girls.

Just finished cleaning the coop. That part of the plan to do it before it got too hot didn't work out. It really wasn't terribly dirty, but it seemed worse thinking about worms and such. Had to shoe five of them out, they like to hang in the coop during the day and were unhappy to leave. And Stewie hadn't laid her egg yet, so she came in to supervise.

Kinky seemed so much better that I returned her to the flock. Some of her symptoms could have been from not eating enough, so Ill try to give her a few nice treats to help her have an interest in food. Some cooler weather would help.

Hi,

Did you find any chicks yet? I live in New Woodstock which is less than an hour from Ithaca and probably a little bit more than an hour from Binghamton. I have Black Copper Marans hatching right now! There are 12 so far. They will be ready to go to their new home on Sunday, July 15th. I am selling them straight run, $6 each but we can work out a deal if you take them all. Let me know if you are interested. You can see pictures of my flock at :
