NY chicken lover!!!!

My sweet little hen is up and walking around her cage --broody cage--I didn't move her from there after she got hurt, even tho she abandoned the eggs.

The swelling is down, but the eye is in bad shape. I am hoping it heals. Only time will tell. She doesn't seem to be drinking, but is very offended when her water is dirty. So I give her clean water a couple of times a day. Maybe she is drinking when I am not looking?

This HEAT SUCKS!!!! The chickens are doing fine, but I am melting.

Edited to add: She flew up into the top nest box. It's looking good, but I am keeping my fingers crossed anyways

You can get some antibiotic opthalmic ointment from blue seal or farm store to put in her eye. It couldn't hurt. Glad to hear that she is still around.

just moved my cockerels to a different pen also. They need to grow a little more before they go to freezer camp. Besides the young girls need a little break!!
The Eglu isn't big enough for more than 3 chickens, now that they are nearly full sized. These two were the primary offenders. The one (crooked toe 4am crower) was suprisingly plump feeling when I caught him last night, but I'm sure there still isn't a whole lot of meat once dressed out. Flock spent the day outside again, wandering and scratching as they please, as they had been doing until Harry thought he should take charge. The NH girl isn't totally free of being pestered, but at least the others are not as persistent as the EE duo. They are all March chicks, but the 2 NHs are maturing quicker, and one is 1 or 2 weeks older than the other, so she is primary target #1 by the boys. Silly boys.

Good luck to the little girl - my fingers are crossed for her too.

I was down in the coop a little while ago to shut the pop door and do a bed check. Everyone was in the usual spots except Lenore, the JG. She's up on the highest roost with the roo, and does NOT have her chicks with her. I freaked out a bit at first, as I didn't see them anywhere and was wondering if they were stuck out in the run or, worse, had escaped the run somehow. Then I took a better look at my broody BLRW in the nest box she has co-opted as sleeping quarters. Mystery solved. She has her own three chicks and Lenore's three all snuggled in the box with her, and is mothering them all. Evidently the JG's chicks discovered that they couldn't follow Mama (that roost would be tough for little ones to reach), so they found themselves a surrogate Mama for the night. It's pretty crowded in that box, but they don't seem to mind.

Woot Woot! Maybe you got to her in time! I hope so. :) I think I'd try some ointment in that eye also. Can you see the actual eyeball or is it just a mess? I had a roo last year with a bad peck injury to the eye. It 'healed' after lots of ointment but he was blind in that eye - It was so bad I thought the eye was pecked out, but it turned out to be under all that mess. He didn't seem to notice except it was very hard to see the bad eye - he'd make sure to turn the good eye towards you always. :)

Oh, and cass? those four eggs you gave me? They are hatching! I think three have hatched so far - including the 'fridge' egg. ;) The other one I am pretty sure has a pip.

What??? You describe all this cuteness and no pics??? Really Hen, you know better! lol

I started this morning with catching my hens, applying the eprinex and releasing them one by one into their run. Talk about mad??? I hope no one was up in the neighborhood as I was doing this at 6 am in my nightgown and rubber boots and they were squawking and flapping like they were being killed. Not a pretty sight and the bottle went flying at one point and I got a little on me. Washed it off though so all should be good. The girls are all sulking and hiding under the coop. I am sure they will view me suspiciously all day and yell at me as well, The silkies were so much easier and calmer. No fussing and they were done right quick. Sigh. I am always the bad guy. And its humid out. Glad I put rooster booster in everyones water as I think they will need it today.

On my way home last evening I was lucky enough to see a momma bear and her triplets. She was a young bear, very healthy looking and had just crossed the road. I saw her and slowed down to have a look and saw the cubs so of course I stopped. I put down my passenger window and spoke to her and she stopped walking to look back at me. Her cubs were really little but oh so cute! She meandered on her way, the cubs following closely and checking everything out. Our little spikehorn came by last night as well. I was sitting out by the big coop waiting for the girls and terrorists to go to be so I could lock them up and he came through munching away. I do believe he takes his cues from the chickens. If they are all relaxed and doing their thing, he feels relaxed and does his thing, even though dh and I are there and the dog is there. If the chickens start drama, he is out of there! He will be a nice buck if nobody shoots him this year. I dont encourage the wildlife to visit but I dont harrass them either. I like to see the wild critters, even the predators, as long as my cheeps are not bothered.

Off to a wedding today. Going to be a hot, sticky one. Finally have a date to get my nonfunctioning gallbladder out. Thursday starts my "vacation". Stay cool everyone!

Whoohoo on the eggs. Ooops, that means the chicks are only 3 weeks old. I put them in the coop last night, after dark. Oh well, it's warmer than warm, I am pretty sure they don't need extra heat at this point.

If you get any hens out of the hatch they should lay some pretty blue eggs. My hens do. I will be interested to know how they feather out. I hatched one of those eggs and the chick is fully feathered, exept the head. Not ONE SINGLE feather on the entire head or neck. Weird. And it is over 3 weeks...probably 6 weeks at this point. The D'uccles I got from Annie about the same time it hatched are fully feathered and flying around. Hope it isn't something with my roos genetics, cuz he's the only lav roo I have.

I am going to try and keep the ones that hatched out of your eggs, but Pyxis is coming to get some for her broody today so I hope I can tell who is who! when you have a pile of mutt chicks it can be hard to pick out anything but the naked necks lol. I tried putting lockdown eggs under my broody, but in only one hour yesterday one pipped (!) egg went missing. Not sure if the hens ate it but you'd think that would leave a lot of blood, right? Either that or a snake got in.

In either case, got those eggs out so hatching only 11 eggs .. 7 are out and I am pretty sure the other four are pipped..

So how are the chicks I gave you doing ? Can you tell if they are all Roos like you wanted? :)
