Deviled eggs sound good for Labor Day, but these fresh eggs are impossible to peel. Maybe I'll trade out some of my mom's old store bought eggs with fresh ones. She always keeps at least 2 doz in the fridge, but never uses eggs for anything.

Fresh eggs peel easily IF you add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to the water when you boil them. Old wives trick...back when almost all old wives had chickens in their back yard.

I have 2 tolbunt x gl polish splits...2 millie fleur duccles...silver laced brahmas all roos for sale...dirt cheap! 8 weeks old...if you take them all...they are free

I hear that. I've got a BR hen broody and so help me she's not getting eggs. I'm ready to post to CL again with these Dels. I posted pair and one guy came and gave me a deposit but he doesn't have a coop yet. I can't hold them. I need the space for hens. If I get stuck with anything it will be hens.

I've been posting them in pairs so I can get rid of the roos. Fall is coming up fast.

I've got three hens on eggs but don't expect a 100% hatch so I'm not to worried. Only three are BM's, the rest are EE's and Dels.

We tried that once, didn't seem to help. Got egg shells of steel, except for the two laying the empty balloon shells.

I'll try it!

We have good shells, too, but my FIL still insists we HAVE to put oyster shell in the coop for them. LOL Sorry, dad. I want to be able to crack mine with something less than a hammer!

Same here....hard shells....but my neighbor who DOES put oyster shell right in the feeder with the feed has much "softer" shells to crack. Like store bought shells. I think that the breed makes a difference. Her's are production reds....like you would find in the super market.
Mine are all sorts of birds and I had to go out and buy a GLASS bowl specifically for cracking them on, cuz they wouldn't crack on my plastic bowls. (And we're not talking cheap plastic here, these are tupperware and rubbermaid bowls)

You know what else I do, in addition to the vinegar....I put them in the fridge over night before trying to take the shells off. I wonder if that make a difference? My shells are really hard too, and I roll them on the counter (well, whack them first, then roll) and the shells come right off.

One time I dropped a fresh egg on the way to the fridge and it hit the floor from waist high...it didn't break...I wasn't shocked, cuz before the glass bowl, I considered using a tack hammer on them

I mix handfuls of oyster shell right in with the feed, just to be sure. I was backing off on the amount because they are super hard, but then I started getting those soft shells from the new layers this week so added more in again. I could see the breed as a factor - the big orps are the two soft shells. The others are all smaller birds. We store the eggs in the fridge, more from habit and now because I have so many I don't want more clutter on my counters to clean around. It is really frustrating because I was always a pro at the crack-roll-peel with store bought eggs. Maybe because they will be 4-5 days old instead of 2 days they will magically peel easier!

I have removed the 3 old eggs I was using in the litter-nest box. Instead of hiking up to the compost pile, decided to give them a good fling out into the hay field. With the elevation from the run, they got pretty good height and distance. They bounced and rolled. *doh* Then I found one random one in the run, looks like someone was surprised, not in a nest area. Flung that one out, it splat. I'll just swap out some of mom's old store eggs, they would be easy.
