NY chicken lover!!!!

Anyone have chicks hatching this w/e or tomorrow? Just need two or so - candled eggs under my broody today and they were both blood ringed. =( She's been broody for almost 6 weeks with nothing to show for it.

Would prefer incubator chicks, so I have less to worry about bio-security wise, but beggars can't be choosers. =)

Mine are due to hatch next week. sorry

I got two hens on eggs and no idea when they will hatch. Should be soon though. I also have three chicks not a week old all broody hatched. Two EE's and Del. You're a considerable ways away though.

Yah, I have three broodies right now and gave them one egg each. Don't need any more chickens, but one of the broodies I feel kinda sorry for - she looks very bedraggled. The other two look just fine, so if nothing hatches for them hopefully the cold will hit and they'll decide no more babies. =)

Oh, and it doesn't HAVE to be this w/e, just that's easier for most people to meet. I still have a few days off next week until I FINALLY start my new job (YAY). It better be good after three months of background checks! =)

I feel like time is slowing down as the date for my chicks arrives....I feel like I cant be better prepared....but there is always something you forget (especially when you have new mommy brain like I do).... I already bought their food etc...anyone think it is too early? I have a month to go...my husband is working in the albany area so I had him pick some up at tractor supply....since we don't have one too close. I also found a real feed store locally (in jersey actually) and they have organic food! YAY So happy to see it today.

Anyone planning to go to the garlic fest?

I had 2 eggs dissappear from under my silkie today. I am sure they were eatten because 1/2 of a shell was in the corner and no one in that coop lays large eggs (they are all banties in there) Inside the half shell that remained there were no veins, no blood, nothing. It just looked like someone cracked a store bought egg and left the shell in the coop. So maybe the mommas do know when there is no development in an egg and throw them out of the nest. The eggs were 5 days under the hen when the got the boot. I think there was similiar timing on the dissappearance of the first egg....5 - 7 days into incubation.

On a lighter note, the first nest that had an egg missing, the remaining egg hatched 2 days early and the chick is small (so was the egg) but alive.

Now I have to get all the juvies out of that side of the coop so the tiny chick stands a chance of surviving.

Thank you. One of DH friend's wanted to come and spray....to kill. I was furious! I was just saying today that keeping bees was going to be my next venture and how convenient that a swarm shows up. Hmmmm, is someone trying to tell me something? I should check out what I would need to make a home for them. They are currently in the trees in our back yard, right next to the coops. So, my kids and our chickens couldn't go out and play today. I felt guilty, so I made the chickens a salad with EVOO and took the girls to ride their bikes in the big barn. Honey anyone...?

They should actually be pretty mellow, as when swarming they have no home to defend. It looks threatening as anything, and there will be bees flying around, but it's unlikely that they'll go after anyone. That said, keeping the area clear is the best bet, as they do become annoyed. Maybe it's a sign that it's time to start keeping bees!
