Morning all! Hope you have your boats ready as its really coming down out there! Funny thing, when I opened the doors this morning nobody was in a hurry to run out into the run! Guess the coop seems a much better place to hang out than out in this rain. Came home last night and made sure all food and waterers were loaded up and freshened up the silkie coops with some more pine shavings. A handful of scratch this morning keeps everyone turning over their litter. Lucky me gets to go get eggs in a bit and I can hear the egg song going loud and strong!

Saw a coyote run across the road in front of me last night on my way home from work. As long as it keeps going away from where I live, it can keep running. The squirrels are getting out of hand and I guess I will have to take a few out. Keeps them from getting into my coops. My daughters friend was complaining about all the acorns at her house hurting her feet. I offered to trade eggs for bags of them so she is now on a mission. I figure its a fair trade as both she and my chickens will enjoy the fruits of each others labors! Of course this rain will mean I will have to dry them on a tarp for a bit.

Supposed to get high winds this afternoon. I hope everyone stays safe and all your coops fare well in this weather.

What a crummy rainy day! Owell, I guess we need it. I could really use it too after all the transplanting/planting I've been doing these past two days. DH let the bigs out of their coop this morning and I'm actually surprised at how quickly they ran out. I'm kinda glad they did because the lavender orps are looking a little dirty and I was just about to come on here and ask what I should do about. They seem to have all this dirt all over their backs and I cannot see giving them a bath, maybe wash them down with a wet washcloth?? IDK I'm keeping the littles in their coop today as I do NOT feel like giving 3 silkies baths tomorrow. Speaking of the silkies one must be laying because they are clucking like crazy out there. I'm getting more eggs from them than I am the orps. They are winning by a long stretch! I had 2-3 days of them laying these yolks and now their back on track.

Adora - any luck with the missing chickens?!?

*hands Rancher a box of foil* Here - use it to try to prevent the spread.

I stand at three chicks again, all with Mrs. B. Lenore's Easter Egger pipped, but apparently ran out of steam and died in the egg without progressing much beyond a small hole. Also, Mrs. B had hatched out a fourth chick this morning, a tiny black one, but it seemed weak to me when I looked at it. I moved her to the broody pen a little while ago, and only found three chicks and her four as-yet-unhatched eggs (they get another day or so, but I suspect they may be duds, as there's no response when I tap them gently). There was no dead chick evident, but there was, well, icky goo and some clumps of unidentifiable yuck. I suspect it died and she may have eaten it, as there is no sign of it otherwise and she had been penned in her nest box. Barf.

If only the three survive, I'll probably end up slipping one of them under Lenore and letting Mrs. B raise the other two.

I may also have a cockerel from the herd of birds hatched here after all. My oldest Jersey Giant/Sussex cross is suddenly looking very rooish, with what look like sickle feathers and possible manly saddle and hackle feathers. It's a really gorgeous bird, black with that green beetle sheen with occasional rust-red feathers shot through, so I'd be extremely pleased if it's a dude.

I think we all have hens who do not hatch every egg. Don't lose heart it may be for the best.

Well, I went to the swap on Sunday and came home with more than I sold!!! 5 silkies, a pair of sweetgrass turkeys, 13-16 barred rocks and green eggs layers, pair of choc dutch rabbits, the doe has been bred I may add.

I am supposed to get rid of some of my critters for winter, NOT trade/buy more!!!

Oh, well they were a good price for them and hard to find in the spring. Does anyone know where I can get 10x10x6 dog kennels for $100?!?!?! I need 2 of them. I am hoping to go to the big Oct auction and find some but still looking for some! anyway here They are!!!

I'm not quite sure I get the idea of whittling down for the winter. Then you only have to start back up in the spring. Not to mention raising more hens to laying age. Having to get rid of roosters that hatch out. Also the more bodies the more heat to keep them warm.

AND don't even try to tempt me with those bunnies. I have wild ones running around the yard a night. One even during the day. Marches through the yard like he owns the place! I take them as a good sign. We used to carry rabbit foot key chains for good luck. I figure they're more lucky if still attached to the rabbit. Not to mention they have four.

I had a broody hatch out 4 chicks yesterday. She was sitting on 9 eggs. This is the third time a broody left the next with youngings running about. Do most of you secure your broodies for a few days, or just let nature take it's course?
