My husband is wonderful, today he decided to become an enabler of my chicken disease....he told me to get the ecoglow...but now I know his secret....he got me the educational pack from brinsea....guess what that means? Incubator for next year! oh and it means he secretly is turning into a chicken lover too. Yesterday we visited a feed store nearby for organic treats and mixes...nearby farm for donuts (300 people in line ...all I wanted was a cider donut!)... Oh we can't wait! I feel like I have the nursery all painted and just waiting for labor again :p

Lucky for me I only have to do the cleaning, feeding, and loving :)

It is chilly out but great football weather, I have to put the garden to sleep for the winter tomorrow, but I have a feeling the weather will interfere with my plans. Hope everyone enjoys the day whatever it brings your way!

Ugh, just had my first hawk attack of the year.. went outside and heard SCREAMING and saw 'something' over at my back coop and lots of flapping.. ran back there and a huge hawk was fighting with Gomez, my NN rooster. Screamed at the hawk, which finally flew off (took him a sec and lots of me yelling) and Gomez was off in the woods, feathers everywhere. Finally coaxed him back in the electric fence - he's got at least one puncture wound and seems a bit shocky, but he's alert enough to not let me catch him. I'll have to see how he is tonight. But he did protect his ladies!! There was a NN hen near the altercation all crouched down and unharmed, so I think Gomez took one for the team. So far he's alive. Guess everyone stays locked up tomorrow while at work. =(

I had a hawk attack last year. After cleaning the hen up I put store brand neosporin in her puncture wounds and talon wounds. She sopped laying for a while(who can blame her?) but she recovered nicely until she prolapsed a vent in early summer. Good luck!!

Hi all , sorry if I don't read backward. Went to Kings Auction today. Ugh! Long drive and not much for chickens. Silkies were going for $1.50. Chicks even less than that. Rabbits about $2 , Guinea pigs 60 cents. Didn't stay for the whole thing. There were ducks and geese and pet birds like finches.

Some veggies too. Eggs went for $1.35 doz., but lord only knows how fresh or not fresh they were.

I always stick my mailing label on my boxes, but I'm sure I'm the only one. If you don't folks don't know who's to blame when their birds start dropping, so I guess I'm a fool for doing so. Plus the auctioneer doesn't say what breed anything is, whether it's a rooster or pullet or buck or doe. Seems to me folks would bid higher for a pullet or a doe.

It is late in the year and most folks there couldn't care less about breeds and all that. I expect many just throw what they buy in with what they have and not quarantine. Over heard one guy saying he lost all his rabbits once.

I have to admit I have a hard time at these things, since many folks aren't real friendly. Course they may be apprehensive of strangers who say "hey how ya doing?' Ain't exactly like I'm gonna bite.

I did meet or rather walk up to a young couple and try to engage them in conversation. I gave them my card and told them about BYC and invited them to check things out.

Maybe I'll go back and catch up but for now I need a nap.

Take care ya'll
