I'm getting less and less eggs. I have my original Del looking naked. Her feathers blew off in a day. My frizzle that was looking like a store bought chicken except live has all her feathers back and is looking good. I don't like the drop in production that comes with molting, but I do like the snazzy new feathers when they come in.

Stewie looks worse each day, feather wise, and now there are some red feathers floating around. Didn't get her sweater done, maybe I should make enough for the red girls too.

On the low egg counts, I remember reading that if there is a lurking predator hens may not lay.

This afternoon I get to go to Sampson State Park for a Newfoundland event. I love to see newfs en mass! Have to leave my Bella home, though. She is almost healed from her surgery, but it will be safer for her to stay home. And I can pay attention to whatever task I am assigned...so hard to concentrate.

They do look so good when the new feathers come in!!

My main roo was molting - he looked so pitiful with no tail.. But it's growing back in now.. looks like he may not have a hard molt this year. A few of my other girls are molting - only one of the langshans looks pretty pitiful -one tail feather sticking up. =) Also getting fewer eggs from the older ladies, but some of my pullets have started kicking in an egg here and there. =)

Sallysec: I don't do anything special. Would consider it if there were any with a super hard molt (look for one of the molting contest threads - egads!!!) but so far my girls haven't molted to butt nekkid. =) I have a lot of naked neck chickens and even they are doing slow molts this year so far.

Wow, I can't beleive it's 6 already, where did the day go?!? Planted two more apple trees in my backyard today, went down the road to one of the smaller orchards to get some apple fritters - not the same fritters I grew up with in CT, but they were good and will have to do since I am missing out on the Apple Harvest in CT this year. :-(

Also had three solicitors knocking on my door this morning....




I think we're getting a little too spoiled with treats!

Tab, so sorry to hear about your brother. You're in my thoughts.
Everyone's talking about molting... mine haven't started yet. I do find more feathers than usual around, but no one looks bare.
Still getting the same amount of eggs. From 19 hens I get 13 eggs per day, almost without fail. I'll be really happy when the australorps start to lay. I'm figuring December sometime. They are 10 weeks old this week. Still trying to find the time to start our second coop. Australorps are still in the garage for now, but they seem happy. One roo started to crow around 8 weeks old. Such a sad "Ahhhhh, ahhhhh". lol
Dh discovered something we can use for insulation in the coops. From an old job he had last year, there is insulation "blanket" used to blanket cement flooring while it's curing. We have a huge amount he had forgotten about. One side is like a tarp material (heavy duty) and the other side like insulation. All we have to do is staple away. I'm so happy! My peeps will stay warm!
Does anyone use electric water heaters for your peep's water? If so, how do you like them?

I use an electric pet water bowl. Works great !
