NY chicken lover!!!!

Ugh.. One of my favorite NN pullets died. =( I can't be sure, but I think she found a mushroom that didn't agree with her. Only thing I can think of because otherwise she looked perfect.. No lice/mites, clear eyes and a red comb. No egg binding either that I could tell. Just wobbly and dizzy and dead within 24 hours. Wah! =(

Sorry to hear. :(

Thank you - it's fun to see all the pics and read all the comments. I am learning so much!

you've got beautiful birds!
featherz, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss... I was out raking today and found lots of new mushrooms! wish it would stop raining! I picked all that I could find and got rid of them. years ago, I had a (different) Pug, and she ate everything, rocks, grass, flowers... and she ate a cluster of 3 mushrooms before I could get them out of her mouth. it was the weekend and being so rural, it's a long ride to the city if she needed a vet... she was wrecked! glassy eyed, wobbly, it was so frightening! she managed to pull through, but at 20 lbs, those 3 mushrooms would've killed a chicken for sure!

Welcome to all the new people.

Mushrooms. ACK!! My yard is covered in them. I step on them as I walk across the lawn, hoping to diminish their appeal as "food" to the birds. I'm sure some of them are poisionious. I'm not going to eat them to find out tho. So sorry for your loss Featherz.

Some of you may remember the coon attack on one of my D'uccles. I thought, for a loooong time, I was going to have to put her down. Guess who has been out of her rabbit cage, outside the coop and running the roo off of the chicks (which aren't hers, btw)? My poor beaten up hen who I almost killed cuz I never thought she would ever have anything resembling a good quality of life. She has a HUGE limp due to her broken middle toe that I didn't splint because I didn't realize it was broken in time (sigh, she was in BAD shape, so I really didn't want to touch her too much) There were two eggs in the rabbit cage a couple days ago...I KNOW she didn't lay both, but she may have laid one of them. Perhaps she has a girl friend who is laying the same color egg she lays so I don't kill her. Regardless, her quality of life seems to be much improved and she has a place in my flock for life.

Friday night the Sumantras go back outside for the weekend. Darn feral birds that won't stay feral. I was really looking forward to having chickens in my trees and babies just showing up, like Stonykill has. Instead I have birds that go to bed early and rise late. LOL

Enjoy the warm temps, everyone.

Hi NY Chicken Lovers,

This will be my first winter with my 6 red sexlink hens who are 7 months old. I've decided not to supplement the light other than the natural light from a skylight and I'm wondering when I should plan on not getting eggs. This is the first week that I haven't gotten a daily egg from each of them and my extended family is getting very used to having fresh eggs delivered to them. I'm hoping I could save a stash of eggs for myself to last through the winter. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Jay

I've made applesauce and just finished a batch of maple apple jam. I still have a couple big bags of apples left to go. I also have a couple boxes of tomatoes to make into sauce. And the pens could use a cleaning. There never seems to be enough time in the day! I'm thinking of being a little lazy and making spaghetti for dinner. Yay barilla box pasta!

I hear that. I just remembered the apple juice I squeeze out a week ago. I bet it's spoiled. I also tossed apples to the chickens cuz I just don't have the time. I've got two squares to knit before next friday and coops to clean and get ready before I leave for AL. Feed to buy and just to much to do.

I found a few on the hay when it got wet. I smushed em' real quick before they got to them. However I am sorry for your loss. I've had this happen on occasion. Let the birds out and all seems fine. Then go out in the afternoon and there she is dead. No rhyme or reason.

Good news is that I have seven little baby chicks - bad news is my little princess broody isn't going to be able to handle that many chicks for long. :p Anyone want a few chicks? Born yesterday and today , mixed breed but very cute! Free if you come get them or meet them nearby. Several are still in the incubator if you are concerned about biosecurity. Had two broodies, one wasn't ready for chicks, but princess is all in. She's itty bitty tho, I think seven chicks are gonna kick her broody butt. :)
