NY chicken lover!!!!

Good news is that I have seven little baby chicks - bad news is my little princess broody isn't going to be able to handle that many chicks for long. :p Anyone want a few chicks? Born yesterday and today , mixed breed but very cute! Free if you come get them or meet them nearby. Several are still in the incubator if you are concerned about biosecurity. Had two broodies, one wasn't ready for chicks, but princess is all in. She's itty bitty tho, I think seven chicks are gonna kick her broody butt. :)
Hey Featherz, have you started that new job yet? Or are you still making that trek to Albany? (i don't want any chicks, just curious!) No chicks for me! I am finally down to my winter number!!!

"winter number"? What's that? I have a broody sitting on 4 eggs right now. Not due to hatch until 10/20. Grr. Gosh darn broody silkie. And I paid good money for her too. I *thought* I wanted a silkie to hatch chicks. I didn't know (cuz I was too new when I got her) that chickens can't read a calendar.

Morning All,
Still crummy weather here, is this what Fall is all about in Upstate, NY?!? Had to run out to the store last night and it's bad enough the state route I live on has no street lights, but I couldn't see two feet in front of me because of all the fog! I've been wanting to clean up the chickens but whats the point if they're just going to be covered in mud/dirt again the minute I put them back outside. Anyway, hoping the rain stays away today. I have my first lesson with someone I finally found close by who has offered to give me some basic lessons/training in horse care/trail riding. I'd eventually like to get a horse of my own but I need some more experience first.

winter number=the amount of chickens I want to keep for the winter. I have sold or processed everybody else. Now to finish the duplex coop.I have started to move my electric netting (pastures) back to the house so in about 6 weeks they will almost be were they need to be for the winter.lt may be hot humid, and rainy today but winter will be upon us soon!

Thanks! I've wanted one all my life, always wanted to take lessons when I was little but it was too expensive for my parents at that time. I spend a lot of time across the street at my neighbors visiting the horse that resides in her pasture, feeding him apples/hay what not. I was over there yesterday for a good hour and half trying to get all those nasty sticky burrs out of his mane, they were everywhere! Definitely going to take a little more to get those out completely! I just hope the woman that owns him doesn't end up having to trim his mane. I have to yet to meet her...I'm hoping to catch her over there one of these days to ask her if she would mind me ever taking him out on the trails we have around here.

Hi Featherz,

Congrats on your new chicks. If it were feb or march I would definitely love some new chicks. My coop isn't heated or lit and I'd probably have to keep them in my house until spring which would be a little too long to have chickens in the house. But if for some reason you have to get rid of a few and no one was willing to take them I'd be happy to turn on my brooder and foster them for you. I'm just 20 minutes away so at least now you have a plan B for your babies.

You tempt me so much to say yes lol, the waiting for my own is killing me...I feel like such a stalker looking at pictures and thinking of names etc...its like being the guy at the hospital pacing outside waiting for a baby to be born. One week to go! I can do it I can do it!!!

Please get some lessons under your belt first!! And go over and introduce yourself to your neighbor! You could offer to help her with horse chores to gain some experience with working around horses. Also, (I have been sitting here trying to figure out how to say this tactfully, but if it is too blunt please forgive me) I have had people approach me, that I don't know wanting to ride my horses. It really has taken be aback! I think that a better approach would be to introduce yourself, explain that you love horses and what your plan is (taking lessons etc). She may offer. If she has more than one she may like the company of another person on a trial ride. Good luck!!!

I just took chicks to auction. What a waste of gas. Should've just post them free on CL. I've still got ten though. I aim to keep these. Two I know are BM's and some Dels of course and one looks to be a BR roo. Which is fine cuz if he's as big as his father he'll have chicken and dumplings written all over him.
