NY chicken lover!!!!

The falling off isn't so bad. It is hitting the ground I hate!! I am so due for a tumble. Friend I ride with got bucked off(not my horse!) broke 8 ribs, her collar bone and had a pnemothorax. AAAUUGGHH!!
Ouch. It's worse when you hit the ground when its cold. Why does everything hurt MORE in the cold? After a while, I finally just would fall off in such a way as to land on my feet.

My 23 year old Morgan-QH is a wonderful lesson/ring horse, but becomes an absolute dink on the trails, spooks at everything. (And yet I bought him from a place that supposedly used him for trail rides near Syracuse when he was 5). 21 year old Arab mare loves to go on trail rides. Her bad knee has gotten to the point we no longer ride her though. And then there is the newbie guy, unbroke 6 year old. I don't think his brain is attached either. I miss my Bingo, he was super pony.
Lynzie - Showsheen works wonders on detangling and removing burrs and burdocks. Some people use WD-40, but I prefer Showsheen. Smells better and is made for hair. It is still a long, slow process but can be done. Spray with Showsheen, then work from the bottom up removing tangles and burdocks and you go. Reapply Showsheen once you get a section detangled, makes it easier to pull burdocks out through slick strands of hair. Don't ever use Showsheen on the saddle area. Showsheen + riding bareback + dink outside ring = fall off.

Hi Featherz,

Congrats on your new chicks. If it were feb or march I would definitely love some new chicks. My coop isn't heated or lit and I'd probably have to keep them in my house until spring which would be a little too long to have chickens in the house. But if for some reason you have to get rid of a few and no one was willing to take them I'd be happy to turn on my brooder and foster them for you. I'm just 20 minutes away so at least now you have a plan B for your babies.

Jay
No takers so far lol! I don't need any more chickens, so anyone who takes them gets to keep them. My little bitty broody is happy with the ones I gave her, but seven??? here she is with two (her last time around)!

Oh and started new job two weeks ago. VERY busy, still haven't decided if I like it yet. :)

At least you're not driving to Albany!!

Lynzi I sounds like your on the right track :) I hope you find it therapeutic, caring for animals doesn't always need to feel like a chore. It is great for your daughter too, I feel bad that my husband doesn't enjoy animals as much as I do because he was raised with different values and animals. It's one of the reasons I'm bringing home chickens lol now that I have kids.

Thanks, I've been trying to get more involved with horses ever since moving up here and now living across the street from one, and down the road from a horse farm. I've always wanted one of my own but of course needed the experience and was never able to obtain it. I'm just not one to throw myself into a group of new people, so the stables were intimidating me a little bit. I finally found a family owned horse farm and I think this will be better for me to get started with - one on one with the woman who lives there, it's just what I need. And like I mentioned, I'm hoping to get in touch with the woman who owns Spirit across the street, and ask if she would mind me visiting him, and possibly keeping up with the tasks I'm learning such as grooming, with him since I can only make it to this woman's place once a week.

Turned out being a nice day today, would have been perfect for getting the chickens cleaned up. I thru some more leaves into the big coop yesterday, all I wanna do it clean that thing out now! It just looks like such a mess in there. Looks like I have a lot to do this weekend.

I have never lighted nor heated. To keep most birds in lay you need to light. My first year buckeyes will lay all winter but none of my other breeds will. I am thinking of lighting late winter so I can get an earlier hatch. If it is just for eggs to eat, then probably not. But who knows....Less eggs being laid every day......
Heni! Will you be selling eggs this winter?

At the rate mine are going, it doesn't look like it. The young ladies still aren't ponying up rent, and most of the older ladies are still molting (it looks like a porcupine festival). My duckehs are laying their little hearts out, though. The chooks need to take a page from their book!

Photo Friday!!!!! Get into the fall spirit....the leaves are fallin'. I woke up to 2 pretty silkie chicks this morning, Isabel did well. Threw some pretty ones. I'll post pics when they dry and fluff.

Sorry for the legnthy post, I miss horse talk and love to share my knowledge.
Lapeerian - I think I used the Showsheen stuff today on the horse I groomed, she said it was a "detangler" but I didn't catch the name on the bottle. It definitely worked wonders! Although, I'm not sure how well it would on Spirit's mane/tail - it's pretty bad. You'd definitely have to spend some time picking them out before using that stuff. He looks like he has dread locks! LOL
Cowboy Magic also makes detanglers too, along with some other companies. With Spirit's mane/tail, it can be done. The Arab mare has lovely long, thick mane and tail (white of course). WIth her hair being so thick, she is constantly losing/regrowing hair, which causes major dreadlocks. One day when the mini stud decided to run through our fence, we turned them into their stalls/paddocks. Her paddock is loaded with burdocks. She had burdocks matted into the dreads. Hubby thought we would need to cut her mane (the horror!). It took a couple hours, but they all came out. Spray the hair/dread/burdock mess to start with, it helps work them out. Just don't completely soak the burdocks, then it becomes a mushy mess. You may want to wear some gardening gloves too, or else your hands will hurt/itch from bits of burdock getting stuck in your skin.

My Showsheen fall-off was when I was about 15 and I was very lucky. Some kids were playing under the grandstand bleachers, which spooked the horse. He jumped sideways, I held onto reins so I wouldn't lose him and landed on hard ground. In his scrambling around, he end up over top of me. His hind foot dragged hard across my chest. He stepped, but knew I was there and didn't put his weight down. I end up with terrible bruising in every shade of black, blue, purple, yellow and green you could imagine. But nothing broken.
My other bad fall was after college when I was a trainer at a small local barn. I never liked doing it, but I had to train and ride green horses when no one else was around. My mom happened to stop that day to watch for a bit. Bratty colt bucked hard and ducked away so I couldn't catch myself or at least slow the fall, cracked my collar bone. I don't blame the colt, I had started him nicely then another 'trainer' had ruined him with poor techniques. The colt had simply become defensive for his own safety and when I encouraged him to walk on, he retaliated. After that, the farm decided they no longer wanted a trainer. I was crushed and have rode little since. I miss it terribly, that was what I went to college for.
