NY chicken lover!!!!

If anyone needs eating eggs, let me know! I'm drowning in them since switching jobs. My new work I have only one customer so far and my fridge is full of eggs! =) They are going to the food bank soon, most likely. Was complaining a few weeks ago about no eggs, but now I am getting 20+ eggs and the easter hatch pullets are just starting. Got a 'first egg' from another EE today - greeeeen!

The two remaining chicks from my last hatch (the ones that I didn't give away and in doing so, they died /sniff) are doing great! No signs of any cocci or problems.

I still can't let the chooks out during the day when I am gone as I haven't been able to verify yet that the neighbors fixed their dog fence. Not sure the premier netting will hold off two determined large dogs. =(

Cass, sorry to hear about your lav.. Did you ever figure out why they were feathering out oddly? I gave the two roos from your eggs over to java so I don't know what they ended up looking like when older, but they definitely were interesting!!

ETA: Just checked my local food bank has a 'special need' for eggs this week so I think they will be getting some! Anyone know if my farm egg donation is tax deductible? :p

Yes it is, at fair retail price. (Cuz the IRS won't beleive how much it really costs to raise these birds to laying age and allow you to average that into the "price" of the eggs)

I don't know why they are feathering funny and late. I do know that I hatched 3 blue eggs and hatched 3 lav chicks. ONE is fine and normal, two are not. I suspect (but have no way of really knowing) that the two birds I got from the same person are too closely related genetically and it is that hen mating with my roo that is throwing the weird chicks. Since the hens are in the same coop, I have no way of knowing which egg is from which hen. They are weird looking from "birth", so I think I will cull them at a couple days old instead of feeding them for 6 weeks to have them die. The second one that feathered really late IS catching up with the normal one. However I have one from these birds that is almost a year old and hasn't laid an egg yet. Needless to say I am really put off on breeding Ameruacanas, no matter how pretty their eggs are, cuz I don't have any that actually lay eggs.

You and I must know the same people!!! I particularly LOVE how they will move onto a dead end dirt road because it is so quaint, then petition to have it a paved two lane road!!! And your right, there's no cars on the road so drive by me on riding my horse the same one lane dirt road at 60 MPH and get upset when I yell at them to slow down. I like it when they complain that "some one keeps shooting a......(OMG!) a GUN!!! Funny how that makes us target practice just a LITTLE more. Having said this, they are not ALL bad. There are some that are truly decent and with a little countryfying(sp?), fit in well.
I bet we do run into some of the same citiots. You are right. They are not all bad. But they have 2 different names. City people and citiots. 2 different breeds of people.

I have an EE roo you can have for FREE, if you can catch him. Hen that came with him does lay blue eggs, about 4 a week. And he could teach your sumatras how to be feral chickens. He roosts in the barn rafters, not in the coop. Spends his days free ranging all through the horse pasture and around the yard. He doesn't eat any feed, which I do like. He would love to have his own flock of girls.

Winter is coming. My cats just caught a mouse in the kitchen, a sure sign that it's getting colder. Stupid rodents. At least my cat who is usually the mouse-hunt ringleader doesn't mess around playing with them - he just kills them, then parades around with them in his mouth until I can wrestle them from him. YUMMY.

What is "bumblefoot"? I am new to chickens and I think one of my hens may have had it but she recovered. What are the symptoms?
Bumblefoot is a staph infection/abscess in the foot. Usually shows up as a swollen foot with a large dark scab on the 'pad' of the foot, but the infection can also be in the toes, between the toes, etc. I've been just watching any cases I get instead of immediately performing the surgery (to remove the 'bumble'/abscess) and so far so good. But if it gets bad, you need to treat it - antibiotics, cutting open the foot to get the abscess out, etc.

I have been treating my hen Elanor for bumblefoot and her feet are looking good. Daily soaking in warm water with dawn dish detergent, the removal of the scabs until I have a clean looking wound and then packing the wound with neosporin, covering with a sterile pad and using self sticking wrap. This is day 4 now of her isolated in a cage in my basement with treatment and she is looking really good. Hers is recurrent when we have so much rain and dampness. She is a trooper though and tolerates my doctoring well. She is the only one out of all my chickens to get it. Dh thinks its a lot of effort for one chicken but I want her for broody purposes so she is worth all the effort. She has the most pleasant personality and will be a great mommy this spring when I put eggs under her. She is in the single ladies coop so her genes, therefore her bumblefoot, will not be passed on.

I was hoping we would get some sun for a few days to dry things out but it looks like more rain in the forcast. We really need some sun and wind to dry things out. I cant rake and bag anything as its too wet and would just rot. Off to the feed store for more feed. At least the girls are paying for it. Delivering 7 dozen eggs today and another dozen tomorrow. My egg customers are happy and so am I!

Looking for full grown female ducks of any breed including Muscovy. Even smaller geese if possible. I have had bantam chickens but the hawks are getting them so I need something a little bigger.......... I am in Columbia County and also have a FREE APPENZELLER SPITZHAUBEN ROOSTER. Come take him!
