I have been treating my hen Elanor for bumblefoot and her feet are looking good. Daily soaking in warm water with dawn dish detergent, the removal of the scabs until I have a clean looking wound and then packing the wound with neosporin, covering with a sterile pad and using self sticking wrap. This is day 4 now of her isolated in a cage in my basement with treatment and she is looking really good. Hers is recurrent when we have so much rain and dampness. She is a trooper though and tolerates my doctoring well. She is the only one out of all my chickens to get it. Dh thinks its a lot of effort for one chicken but I want her for broody purposes so she is worth all the effort. She has the most pleasant personality and will be a great mommy this spring when I put eggs under her. She is in the single ladies coop so her genes, therefore her bumblefoot, will not be passed on.
I was hoping we would get some sun for a few days to dry things out but it looks like more rain in the forcast. We really need some sun and wind to dry things out. I cant rake and bag anything as its too wet and would just rot. Off to the feed store for more feed. At least the girls are paying for it. Delivering 7 dozen eggs today and another dozen tomorrow. My egg customers are happy and so am I!
Is a tendency towards bumble foot genetic? I didn't know that...do chain breeds get it more often etc? Thanks for the info
