NY chicken lover!!!!

Just scheduled for rain here, so I guess I gotta go to work. =( Hubby (who works in NYC) is staying home tho - woohoo! :)

Spent about an hour this evening chasing a little brown leghorn who took her first trip outside and got lost in the woods. finally got her in the area of the coop, but was never able to shoo her in. Hope she's ok tomorrow. :(
He commutes to NYC every day??

That's a commitment!

have fun!!!

We have enough food for everyone, furry feathered and human. My biggest worry is if power goes out. We filled an upright freezer with 1/2 a cow, don't want to lose that. We don't have a generator, but may borrow an extra my dad has just for the freezer. Have a wood stove for heat, going to fill buckets for toilet flushing, and going to make a big pot of Italian Wedding Soup tomorrow that we can heat up on the woodstove (hopefully). Little girl may have frozen chicken nuggets cooked on a stick if she won't eat anything else.
Hubby is all excited to see a big storm. I'm in preparation mode as he spends the time looking at all the forecast models. Have a to do list for tomorrow, not going to wait for it to get here then realize we need this or that. I really hope it is not bad, too many farmers are still trying to restock and rebuild from last year. My dad was trying to get corn off the lower field today. It lies in Army Corp land. If there is threat of flooding in Binghamton, the Whitney Point dam is closed, which backs up water on the field. Lost 30 acres last year of corn.

Sounds like your husband and mine do the opposite commute. Mine is headed up to north of Albany, I am secretly hoping he doesn't go because I don't want to ride out this storm alone.
Yeah, we were in Rotterdam, NY and we lost power for 3 days. In 5 years of living in Rotterdam, we NEVER lost power for more than 2 hours. So being on the mountain will be a whole new experience for us. I am more worried about the high winds, trees near the house, and the possibility of getting snow or ice because of all the rain. I keep asking DH if he is sure that we wants to stay on the mountain, if there is flooding down in schoharie, he won't be able to get to work. At the same time, I don't want to be by myself while a bad storm is going on. Storms up here come on fast and furiously, it is scary....and it ALWAYS hails. Hoping for just rain....a little rain, not buckets upon buckets upon buckets.
I have lived in NY most of my life, and it seems that in the past year or two we have lost power and had more crazy storms than my entire life. Last year we had snow for Halloween and Floyd which devastated my town with flooding. Now this year we had Irene and now this...its crazy ! Such odd weather, and last year we barely got winter with that freak snowstorm being the one and only snow here.

I hope everyone is well prepared and has checked in with neighbors or loved ones that may need some extra help, especially those dependent on medications etc.

I was all stocked up last night and this morning I was so glad because down here the stores are out of a lot of items. Flashlights are almost all gone, I noticed little baby ones at the autoparts store today is all that can be found. I heard stories from people that D batteries are out of stock everywhere. I purchased some two days ago and am glad. I stopped at Costco today to pick up a few things for my father and people got together to make a line to pickup water and carry it to everyones cart (was really nice to see). That is the one thing that always makes me smile, the people helping one another in times of need (Sorry Henicillin that people treat you poorly at these times). The Pharmacy had the longest lines, and the local Chase Bank ATM was out of cash. Glad people are preparing early. I hope everyone rides out the storm well :)

I had to laugh at the contents of carts at Walmart today. ALL the water is gone. People were standing there wondering what they were gonna do. I'm thinking " Umm...don't you have running water at your house right now? Go home, fill some bottles with water." I just shook my head and walked away. I have a well and a power outage is a huge problem when it comes to water. (I usually have plenty filling my basement and none coming out of my tap) I keep bottles of water stored under a table in the back porch all the time, just in case. But then I always was a good Boy Scout. Winter is coming....Time to get ready to for whatever Mother Nature has in store for us.

I hope that everyone survives with no damage to life or property. I can't wait for it to be over, since I get to spend all the nights alone until the State Emergency Command Center shuts down.

I always wonder what they do with the last cases upon cases of water they bought. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the more... interesting individuals just poured the contents out of the bottles. "Well, we didn't get hit - don't need any of this anymore!"

Our Hannaford wasn't out of anything, and wasn't crazy at all. I thought briefly about going over to Walmart out of idle curiosity, just to witness the carnage and chaos, but thought better of it. The Zombie Apocalypse will come soon enough - I don't need any previews.

Looks like we're only getting rain here starting around lunchtime according to the weather channel. Friday just happened to be my grocery day, every living thing here needed feed. At least I'm well stocked just in case. We mowed lawn over the past couple days and I'm going to go out and rake clippings for the chickens this morning before the rain hits. They love to scratch through the grass.

Morning all! Pharmacy was crazy yesterday. You would have thought that people were going to be stuck in their houses for weeks the way they were carrying on about needing their meds, cant you call the dr?, etc. etc. Really? This thing has only been on the news all week and you wait until saturday, down to your last pill/out of refills, to come in and get a refill? Glad I;m not depending on them for help! Okay enough ranting.

Did my usual grocery shopping yesterday and stocked up on feed for the cheeps. Sat outside work when I was done for 5 minutes just for a breather and was witness to almost three accidents. People are crazy. Anyways, filled feeders and waterers and everyone is outside right now in their runs enjoying the leaves I raked in. Have to rake some more later. Making bread and then am off to a wedding show with my daughters. The oldest is engaged and is dragging me to this thing. However, since its time spent with my girls, I will go and have a good time. We are all set for whatever comes. Who knows, maybe it wont be as bad because we are all set! Be safe everyone.

Stony--I want pics of your costumes!

Rancher--barking dogs are worse than crowing chickens. I hope you are having a good visit despite the dogs.

I'm out your way Henicillin, out in Averill Park. Actually closing on a house in East Nassau on Friday!

Anyway our local hannaford wasnt crazy at all either, there were a few people buying cases of water but mostly older people. I was shocked at the number of cases laying around actually...same with batteries etc.

I have to go out to the East Greenbush Walmart in a bit for a few things...I'm a little afraid to go. It could be worth a laugh however. I will let you know how that goes
