NY chicken lover!!!!

Jay,
Unfortunately this is the time of year that all predators are looking for a free and easy meal, chicken is on everybodys menu! You are doing the right thing by being out there while they are freeranging and having your dog there as well. I would stick close to them while they are freeranging and lock them up when you cant. I am having the same problem with a hawk and a falcon so nobody is out unless I am right there with them. I have also had a coyote make a try and some bears pass through. At some point I will probably lose a chicken to a predator but I do my best to make sure that I am a diligent deterent. This fall has been the first time I have had any predator problems and an abundance has shown up this year. I have found that being close to the cheeps has been a great deterent to keeping the hawk and the falcon away. Like I said, chicken is on everyones menu so stay close or lock them up.
Those hawks are out in full force. I haven't really seen them close all summer, since the weather turned colder, they hang out at the tree line and watch the chickens in the runs. We are always hovering when the silkies are out, but the hawks are making me nervous.

I haven't been able to be on BYC in quite a while, except to view one or two threads. Just noticed this and had to respond...

featherz...how are you getting so many eggs? I got 1 today!!! 30+ hens and 1 lousy egg...I think I should be getting out the crock pot! (oops, forget I said that, lol) What kind of layers are you thinking of re-homing?
Dunno yet, whoever looks at me funny. =) I don't have anything fancy here just designer mutts and naked necks LOL. I got another 25 today. I have 60 chickens, but that includes 2 roos, 2 chicks, 2 broodies, a handful of molters and 15 much too young to lay. And a pile of pullets just getting into laying eggs. Bringing 20 dozen to schuylerville tomorrow I think - anyone know, do they sell the eggs on saturday with the farm animals or let them sit until the next week? I'll ask when I get there, but was curious.

For the folks near Chatham, Blue Seal Feeds has a good coupon this month for two bucks off any 50-lb bag of Home Fresh poultry feed formula, limit five bags per customer. I'll be heading over that way tomorrow!

is this their new extra egg formula? I don't recognize the packaging. Darn, I was just there yesterday, but I did have my $10 savings through the frequent buyers plan.....so I couldn't have used the coupon anyway yesterday

I haven't been on here in a while. We just got rain and wind nothing major here. Yesterday I got 18 eggs which was an improvement from the past couple of weeks. I have some pullets that have just started to lay and my older birds seemed to have staggered their molts. So I've not had a day where I've gotten no eggs. I brought the girls trick or treating to the hospital on wednesday. My brother has been in since monday. He started a new chemo while there. The doctor told him that if there isn't a response in his liver enzymes that he should look into paliative care and prepare for end of life. His chemo ended on wednesday and they may release him to go home on monday. I feel like someone is ripping off a body part after getting this news.

My rays of sunshine and proof of miracles.

Good Morning!
Going on 90 days of rain here...I swear if someone told me this is what Fall is like in Syracuse I would have never moved here! I hate rain, I'd much rather snow than this sopping wet muddy mess! My yard is awful, the kids can't go out to play, it's freezing, the chickens haven't been out much. I can't remember the last time I saw sunlight. I think I figured out the reason one of my orps hasn't been laying. Seems to be she IS molting - not a lot, just in areas around her neck. I'm back to getting 1 egg a day from lavender orp hen and of course the silkies still take the lead with two eggs every day, they don't skip a beat that's for sure.

Tab - Sorry to hear about your brother. I couldn't imagine getting that kind of news. That is just awful.
