NY chicken lover!!!!

I was just out clipping off the collard and broccoli plants to put in for the chickens. They were happier than pigs in mud.

Now how do we know pigs are happy in mud? Would they be less happy in say a cleaned out stall with hay? or running round your livingroom? Just funning ya.

Pharm, I know cooties can visit us anytime and I've had a few. Or at least I think I've seen them. I just Bomb everything with DE and Exprinex and whatever else is safe. An ounce of prevention you know. If anything spooks me I'm loaded for bear as they say.

Got a e-mail about tax exempt situation and I may be able to get the exemption. Gotta fill out the form when I get home.

Take care and stay warm.

Okay...so everyone is getting eprinex tomorrow and I am going nuclear on the hens coop. I am having dh pick up the permethyrin dust from tsc on the way home as well as the spray and I will do a full cleanout, then spray and dust everything and every crack I can find! I will also put dust and de on everything before I put fresh litter down. I will probably dust the run and under the coop as well. Then it will be on to the terrorists coop to do the same thing as a preventative. If I get both those done and all the chickens treated tomorrow, then it will be a good day. Of course, its supposed to be cold so my hands will probably be frozen as well as everything else. Oh, and its my only day off. So much for a little down time!!!

Sat out for an hour freeranging the silkies and almost froze to the chair. Chased them back into their coop/run and came in to warm up. No sign of the hawk or falcon but that doesnt mean they werent around. The boys are sqabbling among themselves and I had to remind them who is boss (me).

Thanks for your input. I was wondering what you did with the bedding you removed Ginny. I was reading that you should either bag it or burn it so the mites arent a problem any more. Anyone else ever do that??? I dont want to put it on my compost heap if that is the case because the chickens dig through it.

Have you ever used ashes for mites ..I hear it works well ..Bee recommends it ..Heres the thread ..it sounds like you already have them ..as you have a.Fire pit ?

My brother's liver function showed improvement so he starts another round of chemo on Monday. I was happy with the news because it is nice to have something positive happen in such a dire situation. He's essentially living 2 weeks at a time.

I'm on vacation this week starting. I'm looking forward to not having to wake up at 2am and my youngest is turning 3 on friday.
My son & I listened to a pod cast today & I thought about you & your brother
Have you heard about The mineral Selenium helping cancer ?

Gramma Chick- I personally haven't researched much on it. My mother has every chance she gets and was always running things by my brother. He didn't always want to talk about it because he didn't want his whole life to revolve around the cancer. He is a physical therapist and has good knowledge on the body and meds. He was out of college 6 months when he was diagnosed. Thanks for the links. I'm going to share them with my mom.

My brother is in the hospital again. He keeps retaining fluid and they aren't sure why. Thursday they drained off over 5 liters. It was a bad day, but yesterday he was better. I made pumpkin cheesecake and brought the girls to the hospital for my youngest's birthday. My brother got her a stuffed monster that burps and says oopsy. She loved it. Positive spirit I believe works wonders.

Today I'm going to try and separate all my birds for breeding. I'll give them some pumpkin too.

Morning all! I think I managed to kill everything in the coop. No signs of mites anywhere and there shouldnt be as I used enough spray and powder to kill a bear in there! My one hen Trouble still had some yesterday morning around her vent (man do they run fast) but I see nothing this morning. I think the ivermectin kicked in. However, I did dust everyones butts and under the wings, etc at 630 this morning just to be sure. They were not happy with me using the catch net. Trouble seems to still be under the weather but that could be due to the ivormectin and the mites and molting. Hopefully she will pick up soon. They do have the nastiest smelling poop when I put iver on them! The silkies will get theirs when I get home today (so much easier to do them!) and the terrorists will get theirs after dark. Dh is out hunting so hopefully he will be able to stay awake long enough to help me. Hoping for some fresh meat as well. Heard lots of shots this morning so far. Had to break ice in the outdoor rubber buckets this morning.

Tab--you are right about a positve spirit helping in a serious medical matter. Your brother sounds like a real fighter with a sense of humor and that goes a long ways towards trying to get well. He sounds like its the life in living kind of guy.

Rancher--every time you say cooties all I can think of is that game Cooties we used to play at my aunts house! Do you remember that game?

You know, I used latex gloves covered with a pair of gloves, changed my clothing and masked but I still feel like I dusted myself and inhaled it. I wonder if it will keep cooties off me! I guess what doesnt kill you....but the taste in my mouth is terrible! Oh well, cant be any worse that all the stuff I have absorbed and breathed in at the pharm. Have a good day everyone!

I was washing my crock to start saurkraut and I cracked it using hot water.

The worst part is that I know better about using crockery.
I have a ceramic insert crock. Hubby would take it directly from fridge to heating in the crock without letting it rest at room temp, so end up with a bunch of micro-cracks in the bottom. It is still functional, but use the crock liners to keep food from leaking through. Last Chirstmas he got me one of the nice programmable crocks with the non-stick insert, so don't need to worry about cracked ceramic. I only use the new crock now, but keep the ceramic insert one plus a smaller one to use at Thanksgiving. Frees up stove space to cook then dump in the crock to keep warm. And I make fresh crock pot applesauce. We host his family. 14 adults, a 4 year old and two 2 year olds. Good times.

This weekend is major cleaning - fridge, oven, microwave, bathroom.....

My crock is an old 8 gallon earthen ware crock. I don't think they make liners for those. I make fermented saurkraut, no vinegar.

We're planning to go up to my parents if all goes well. We usually have it at my grandma's across the street from them.

Tab's give your brother my best. I'm sorry about your crock even though I don't like kraut.

Pharm, I was alive before they invented the game. Some of the older games are still fun. Families just don't take the time to play them together. Right now DS and GD are playing a video game together. Killing and killing and killing.
