NY chicken lover!!!!

Quote: Where the Hens the Austalorp roo grabbed white or light colored ? Mine picks on my 1 white chicken ...all the rest of my hens are shades of brown ..he doesnt pick on them

He doesnt dare do it when shes near me . mostly when I have thrown them treats to scratch ..She watches him too most times he cant catch her .
Then other times they get along fine ...It is a puzzle to me ..I think he is prejudiced against white chickens ..I have heard other people say that about chickens ...

Chickprincess Buddy and his girlfriends free ranged yesterday for their first full day together. He's still a bit hen pecked, and still no crowing. I saw him 'yawn' yesterday, maybe he's starting to get the itch. He is still a perfect gentleman.

Morning all. Slept in really late (8 am) and boy are the cheeps mad! I ran out and let everyone out and the boys are still telling the whole neighborhood their sob story. You would think they were the most mistreated chickens the way they are carrying on! Anyways, on a good note I found an egg in the hens nest box this morning. After not laying for almost 2 months I am hoping they are starting up again. Between the heavy molt, mite infestation and short daylight hours, they had a rough time. I put them on straight egg producer (21 percent) and I think its made a difference for them. Everyone else is getting a mixture of the egg producer and layer feed.

A check of the weather shows nothing on the radar and all the alerts are gone so it looks like a good day to go get my daughter.

Rancher--so excited for you to have your family coming for the holidays! Your dw will be one very happy woman!

my old girls who are 4 to 6 years old just started laying again after their molt. I LOVE getting those HUGE RIR eggs from them. They are jumbo eggs the size of the eggs from my Pekins.

Speaking of my Pekins they are doing well. I moved them back to their run yesterday morning and yesterday afternoon moved the runners in with them. I see the Pekins going back and forth to the food bowl and one right now is in the pool. Finally seeing them eat again....makes me happy.

As yo can see, the Pekins are far from normal right now, but all things considered....I'm happy. This pic shows the Pekin one the right (self appointed head Pekin

. The funny looking heads are due to Nustock. Their heads have torn flesh, missing feathers and missing skin. The Nustock is helping a lot.

Morning all,

Was up early 3:30 listening to Alistair Begg, and knitting (yes I knit and I crochet too) my square for the church group. I have no one to blame but myself for not having it done sooner. I do like to knit but with the holiday and all I just couldn't get started. The group knits 12" squares to make blankets for those who are sick in the church. The point being to pray for whoever the current blanket is for while doing our squares.

Stony - I hope the girls all heal fine and things get back to as normal as can be expected. I'd be happy if my BR's would start laying again. I've only recently heard of Nustock. What is it and what is it for? Is it something I can keep in my medicine chest of cures and remedies for the chickens? I'm not remotely tempted to get ducks.

I have a Del hen in the quarantine box. She seems fine in every way except she walks like a duck. She also is not laying. She seems to be eating and her poop seems fine. No lumps or anything like being egg bound.

Pharm - I've got everyone on Purina though I'm supposed to pick up two bags of Egg Producer from CM. They had to order it. They never call when it comes in though.

The Dels seem to be laying better since I've gotten home but the BR's, EE's, and orps don't seem to be doing good. I've no idea if the CR's are laying, but I gather not since I might get three eggs from that coop of 13 hens. The BR's were molting when I left for AL but look nice now. Just no eggs. There are two SLW hens in the mix too. That coop never has been what I would consider good layers.

I also have a coop with four BM's and a LS. I get two eggs from the BM's a day. The LS is still brooding the three chicks which I intend to pull out tonight most likely. I have a brooder with 5 chicks fully feathered and I'll put them with those.

No squirrels this am but did catch 2 mice near the runs and one in the garage. Yes I'm keeping score.

I really should notch that tree. I suppose I could just hang the mice tails to the fence. As it is I just toss them into a pile inside the garden area where the chickens can't get to them. I'll never catch them all I know.

I really do wish they'd increase the font size for those of us with bad eyes. I can read everyone's postings faster and would rather not have to increase the size every time to do so.

well that's too bad. I find raising ducks much less work than raising chickens and if I found myself in a situation where one of them had to go, the chickens would go and the ducks would stay. Never any pecking order issues. And plain old entertaining as well as out laying the chickens this year.

Nustock can be picked up in good feed stores or online. It is an old remedy for treating wounds, with only 3 simple ingredients. It is for all skin disorders, wounds cuts, deep wounds and eliminates the itching of healing. It is now in my medicine box and for $14 for a large tube which should last years on poultry, it is well worth having on hand.

Perhaps my comment about ducks came off harsh? I didn't mean for it to. Believe me I've thought of Khaki Campbells. I can't handle two types of fowl. It would mean a complete overhaul.

Ducks I've read are hardier than chickens and less susceptible to disease. I can only deal with one and never considered Ducks in the beginning or I might have only them.

no Rancher they didn't at all. my pithiness can sometimes come off as such. I didn't take it that way at all. As for the Nustock, it should be in your arsenal

Hello All,
Almost said Good Morning - Geez where did the time go today?!? I've been in such a funk since Friday, with both kids sick I didn't really do anything the last two days but sit on the couch with them both watching cartoons. I need to snap out of it today tho...was thinking of cleaning up Pearl's box today. Need to do it in a such a way I don't disturb her too much tho. And the eggs are a complete mess! I'd like to get those cleaned up as well. They were a mess the other day when I candled them.

Stony - I love seeing pics of your ducks! They are just soo cool looking. And they look like they have a TON of character too. I can only imagine how fun it is to sit back and watch them.

Rancher - Congrats to your friends new baby! I love the name Elliot! And what a nice surprise for your wife to have your son up for the holidays.

Pyxis & Stony - so very sorry to hear of the losses of your ducks.

Alright well I'm off to do some cleaning while my youngest is sleeping. Hope everyone has a great day!

It was great to get home from Long Island and hear my rooster core to wake me, and see all the chickies. DH did a fine job of caring for everyone, but on the last day he reported a jailbreak. He had not secured the gate, and the girls pushed it open, he believes they were avoiding Reveille...All survived a morning of free ranging and were back in their yard when he came home for lunch. Now we have duckboards leading to the coop so neither of us will slip on the clay soil...gotta sayI have done that, soma happy for the improvement. Maybe I should go away more often.

I drove an Emergency Response Vehicle while on LI, our base area was at Aquaduct and sometimes we could see jockeys and horses on the track. Driving those big ERVS was challenging, especially taking into account the mindset of the local drivers. Also went on crowded streets in Brooklyn, and out by Far Rockaway, once to Breezy Point, but just the Western section. Lots of work is going on to get back to normal, but it will take some time.

Didn't see any chickens, other than the meals we served, but found a great chicken childrens book. Beautiful Yetta, the Yiddish Chicken by Daniel Pinkwater. It looks like he may have a couple of other chicken books, will have to check the library. Yetta speaks Yiddish, and the parrots speak Spanish, so it's a multicultural book...

Sorry for all the predator losses, and am praying for Tab and family. Lots has happened while I was away from computers, it took two days to catch up!
