NY chicken lover!!!!

Stony, is that a mink? As many as you "see" at your place, your should trap them and skin them. Looks like a nice fur coat...just saying.

no that is a weasel. I've only ever seen 2 minks in 9 years. Weasels 4 in the last 6 months. I tried to give the last weasel before this one to my trapping buddy. Unless they are all white they are 100% worthless. And the cat and I have only killed brown ones with white belly's.

Adrenalin rush 1st thing this morning. Still shaking from either the cold or the rush.

Had to grab the .22 quick and get a perfect gloveless shot off on it in the 5 below zero temps.

Good Shot ! I quess all the chicken noise woke you up ..I wish I could shoot that good . We would have some dead foxes around here . I have trouble with the aiming .
I have never used a gun before this last year ..I am a true GReen horn

it wasn't near the chickens but by the building the feed is in. They were blissfully unaware it was there.

Thanks! I've been shooting since I was 7.... so 38 years of practice......

So why exactly do I need roosters???
My Henry is really not doing well today/tonight. When I went out this afternoon he was huddled, laying down underneath the nest boxes. When I shut out the lights, he did get up to go roost but didn't have the strength to fly up. I picked him up to set him up there and he's lost a lot of his body weight in just the last few days. I figured maybe he could spend one last night with his girls. I will be surprised if he makes it until morning.

I have 1 BA roo that is just plain old mean and sets off the other BA roo (who hasn't started mating yet but they are the same age). BA roo #1 even gets mad if my EE roo mates with a hen, and then they both seem to beat up on her.
Which really makes me wonder... should I go without roosters at all?

I guess you could eat the mean one ..He seems like the problem .
How is Henry doing ? I Havent heard from you in a couple of days

I'm so glad I'm not the only crazy chicken lady that makes warm oatmeal for the chickens!
Hubby pokes fun of me all the time, I make them breakfast more often than I make it for him...he might be right.
I'll have to try brown rice, I never seem to have it in the house. I should have given them the quinoa that moths got into.

Edited to say:
Nice shot stonykill! Never saw a weasel before, I'm sure they're around. I did see a martin once up in the ADK's when I was little.

Happy New Year Everyone !
My chickens are getting used to this snow ...I have been shoveling them little pathways ...with some green grass showing on the bottom ...to tempt them out .
Does anyone also give their chickens rice ? I made a wild rice , Brown rice , & regular rice .dish ...It didnt go over well with the family .
Chickens loved it ..so I made some for them this time ..I think I will serve it to them warm...the warm oatmeal seams like it is a hit ..

If there is spanish rice at the school and I get the left overs I give it to the girls onions and all. They don't seem to mind.

Nice shot Stony.

Saw tracks near the back hoop coop this am but not sure what from. Snow is deep might be a deer not sure. I mark that corner so that might be why there was no trouble.

Have something living under the nearer coop. I suspect the rabbit that hangs around. No trouble with the Chickens. I have seen rabbit prints but no poop.

I was setting mice traps and catching a few but it's to darn cold right now. Perhaps in a few days .
