NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi everyone. I'm a new member here and am roughly a 1/2 hour S.W. of Syracuse. I'm so impressed with the large, friendly community base here and am looking forward to learning A LOT.

I'm self educating myself this winter in preparation for starting a small spring (hen only) flock with enthusiastic help from my 11-year old son. The primary purpose of these chickens will be for pets / eggs. We love our animals.

At this juncture, I'm planning on finding starter pullets, rather than raising chicks. This is due to a busy spring schedule. However, I welcome any feedback and advice from others based on their past experience(s) with chicks vs. pullets.

I'm very interested in Barred Rocks, Orpingtons, Australorps or Americaunas. Looking for cold-weather hardy, friendly disposition birds that are not overly broody. I'm hoping to hook up with someone reputable nearby that is willing to sell me some starter hens in the spring .... ?? I wouldn't mind making a drive somewhere, say an hour or two.

Happy New Year to all, and thanks in advance for info you'd like to share!

Welcome To The New York thread !
I would recommend starting with chicks even though you have to wait for them to lay eggs
The main reason is they will be tamer & you will miss the best stage of having a chicken ..What I call the Peep Peep Stage ..
Why else would everyone want to hatch ? It is the cutest & most hands on stage of the chicken .
It is so fun to watch them grow & watch their personalities develop .
I am personally waiting for Spring so I can hatch a few for myself !

Welcome to the NY thread on BYC. Ditto what cass said!!!!

Chickprincess, sorry to hear about Henry. It is always sad when they die.

Welcome Tough Old Bird! Your addiction is about to begin and we will be happy to enable you in any way possible! You say you want to start small. So did we and 2 years and 4 coops later we are "small"! If you can, build big. Small coops are cute as are tractors but fitting in things like water heaters and cleaning them can be tricky. I know, I have two small ones that I have to haul water every day to in the winter time as there is no room for a heater. I have barred rocks and find them to be personable, sometimes friendly and good egg layers. Hands down, my red sexlinks and rhode island reds have been the best, most consistant layers so far. I also have golden laced wyandottes.

Getting chicks and raising them can be fun. Watching their personalities develop is fun and more importantly, handling them consistantly from a young age allows you to bond with the chicks and to know them so well that you can tell by looking at them if something is off. However, you do have to keep them under a heat lamp for a period of time and then acclimate them to a coop outdoors. You also have to wait till late summer before they start laying, sometimes longer. They are also cheaper to buy as chicks. I have no experience buying started pullets but because of the time and expense of raising them, you will pay more per bird.

Whatever you decide, do your homework. Read lots on the forums and talk to people in your area who raise chickens. See if you can visit someone who has the kinds of birds you are looking for so you can see them yourself. Good luck and keep us posted.

Welcome TOB! I am in Cortland County, so a little farther south of you. I am in my first year of chicken keeping, just got mine last March/April, so personally can't help out with providing birds (yet). I have some Blue/Black Orps and I really like the beautiful birds, but the line I have quit laying in October and haven't laid since. (I don't supplement light). The one Australorp has been laying 2-3 a week still. I got 2 NH (may be red sex links), a GL Wyandotte and a EE from a girl in Morrisville. They have been laying straight through winter, slowing a little during molt. I also have Anconas, usless little birds they have been. If the blue orp goes broody, I'll get some Barred Rock and Delaware eggs from Rancher in Syracuse to try our first hatch.

Welcome!

From my knowledge and experience all those breeds are not overly broody except Orpingtons. Of my 5 Orps last year they went broody 7 times combined. This might be just my Orps, but I thought I would let you know.

Rancher, I buy my oatmeal at a local co-op. It's the old fashioned oats.
I eat it and share with the Silkies.

I also get the brown short grain rice at the local co-op.

We went to purchase Blue Seal Feed at TS yesterday....THEY MADE
UNWANTED CHANGES. New bag and less good ingredients.

We have been with Blue Seal for years. Perhaps it's time to change?

Tough Old Bird - Welcome! you may as well build a whole shed. I have a chicken tractor, thinking I would never want more than 6...I lied to myself. I will be building a much bigger coop this spring. I agree that chicks are nice to start out with, they really don't require that much extra work.

Chickprincess I'm so sorry about Henry

Aria - Silkies huh? Now I know why you share it with them. They've got you hypnotised. (ain't got time to check for spelling)

TOB - 1/2 mile sw of syracuse puts you near South Onondaga or Marcellus I think. I don't breed pure Amers but my EE's are half that to more. I have a Lav Amer roo over EE's. Right now I'm getting blacks.

Most folks have to be forced into a nut house, here most of us are here by choice. Stay away from Silkies and you'll be fine.

This darn thing just won't let me edit. What's showing up is not what I intended to submit.
