NY chicken lover!!!!

Cass,
My solution to carrying the 50 lb bags when it is not possible to access MANpower is a little plastic sled. I set it under my tailgate and lower the bag/s onto it and give it a gentle tug! Off we go. I pull it right into the basement. I even have used this in summer, it slides pretty well on grass, gravel, you name it. And I like the cost.

We use the same system for hauling water in winter. Need to haul 3 buckets of warm water for the horses/chickens every night and any morning that they stay inside the barn due to weather. Requires a little more than a gentle tug for us though, 3 full buckets up a hill. Actually need to go do that right now. I'm stalling, don't wanna go out in the cold!

I've just been catching up, haven't been on in a week.

Sorry to hear about Henry.

Welcome TOB!

I have blue laced red wyandotte, golden cuckoo maran, delaware (originally from rancher), buckeyes (from Ginny), silver ameraucana, frizzle naked neck olive egger project birds

I'm going to surf the web for a flat bread recipe to use the whey in. I have pancake mix I'll use it in instead of water, too.

I'm doing ok. Routine is coming back into play and makes it seem like nothing ever happened. It's still surreal.

I have some 5 year old Sumatra's who have slept in a tree every night of their life. Well ok ...except when their mama hatched them. Wind, sleet, snow, rain, 20 below zero F ....out in a tree. Draft free....

Just kidding. I know what Cass meant . She has been here and knows too many of my birds can't be cooped.

Just gave the chickens a new treat. Last night we had Maine lobster. We enjoyed it a great deal and haven't had fresh lobster in a long time, so it was all the better. I looked at all the debris left over and thought perhaps the shells could be good grit and calcium for the birds. So this morning I dragged almost one leftover shell in and cut it up a bit with my kitchen scissors. When I took it out, some of the girls were excited about the rice and salad but leery of the red shells. Not Stewy! She bustled right over and chowed down on a big bit of meaty stuff. Stewy has come a long way. After her molt she has beautiful feathers, and no one messes with Stewy anymore. So the others plunged in and scattered stuff all over. Am going to try the food processor to make things more compact...don't tell DH...misuse of a tool...very bad.
