NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all! It was such a nice day yesterday and we got some meltage. The cheeps were happy about that. I was going to do some housekeeping in the coops but must have slept wrong or something cause I couldnt turn my neck. Felt like whiplash and painful. Better this morning and I can actually turn it some. Hope it goes away soon. Work should be interesting.

I did manage to get a few pics of my silkies. They are missing me sitting out there with them. Every time I open the door on their coop, they run over for attention. Silly birds. The terrorists and big girls only come running if I have the red coffee can in my hand. That means goodies. It seems like the rir eggs are getting bigger now. Do they lay jumbo size? These are pretty big.

Gramma--I have been getting those little eggs from time to time here. Only once did one have a yolk in it, otherwise they were all whites. Still tastes the same!

Rancher--I thought I had a lot of roos but you have me beat hands down! Hows the noise level at your house? Mine are pretty quiet actually. Only crow in the am, if a predator is around or if one of us steps outside. Makes for happy neighbors.

Have a good day all!

I was going to say I cracked it open ..guess what I got ? I A itty Bitty Egg almost all White with a yolk sac with a dash of yolk ..Tasted Pretty Good ! LOL

Stony - Sounds quite noisy at your house ! I dont like it when my one Roo Crows ..He usually has a reason though ! I dont hear his early morning wake up call I am totally zzzz out ..

T Old Bird - Wood ashes work for dusting for mites too . They will dust themselves if you give them some .All Natural !
Yougurt is good once in a while to keep their digestive system normal .
apple cider vinegar with mother in it in their water helps keep them strong
Fermented feed helps them get all the nutrients from the feed ..They eat & drink less too !
I havent used any Medicine on my chickens except
Neosporin , Epson salts , Blue coat , antibacterial soap ,

How is this for naming the urge to have chicks ?

Stony, stony, stony....I'm sure you have some antibiotic ointment around the house you would use on puncture wound....you know the kind without pain killer....

TOB, I have blue kote to spray on red spots so the ..............
not usually. I just clean up such a wound and slather it with Nustock.

I used to use Blukote. Messy...needs to be reapplied often....so now I use Nustock for everything I used to use Blukote for. AND it actually heals and just doesn't put purple goo on your hands

I have a couple hens who are getting some bare backs (one in particular) from some overly hormonal boys. Other than those saddles, what can I do? Would there be anything that might keep the roos away for awhile to give her a break? Or to help heal her? She's not bloody, just naked.

Sometimes it's not the rooster but other hens. I had some Aussies and GLW's that just were getting picked on. I think while on the roost. I just gave them away.

However I did have a single RIR with a group and she too was being picked on so I moved her to the Del coop and she grew out really nice. Then she got out and insisted on going back to her original flock and there she is. Not being picked on and laying just fine.

So what's my point? If these two girls are of a different breed it might be the other breeds picking on them at night. If not I suggest you move them to another coop til they grow back their feathers and then (at night) reintroduce them to the original group. Of course that is if you have no where else to put them.

One thing I've learned is that you will need a place to quarantine a bird or birds now and then. This can be a simple metal dog pen or a small coop for one or two. You can sometimes find a nice used cage on CL.

I wish you well,

Rancher

how many hens do you have? and how many roosters? If your roo to hen ratio is out of whack... this could be part of the problem. If they all live together 1 roo for every 6 to 10 hens works well for me. More roo's than that in a single pen with that number of hens results in bareback and dead hens.
I had one breeding pen with 4 hens and 1 rooster. Both White leghorns were bareback for 6 months easily. Thanksgiving week I put their rooster in freezer camp and replaced him with a larger younger rooster. By mid December both of those hens were almost back to normal and now look magnificent. AND are laying better than ever.

But my guess is your rooster to hen ratio is way out of whack

In the short term put some Nustock on their bare backs and let them grow back some feathers.

The Chick Itch - I like it!

We had a roofer come to tarp off the spot on the roof where the shingles were torn off. He's from Guatemala, and is a friend of one of Alan's co-workers. The dude was absolutely thrilled to see that we keep chickens and ducks - he said it reminded him of home, and that more people should do it. Alan replied that we agree!

TOB--I have many of the above mentioned items in my chicken emergency kit. Much of it I bought on sale where I work in the hba section. Things like neosporin, saline eye wash, self sticking wrap, gauze pads, etx. I also found a great product called veteramycin. It comes as a spray and an eye ointment. Works fabulously! I used it on my hens eye when it was swollen almost shut and cleared it in two days. My moms dog got into it with the neighbors dog while she was here and we think a tooth hit his eye as it was all swollen and painful the next day. I remembered the eye ointment and starting rinsing the eye with the eye wash, applied the ointment and after two days it was back to normal. I also have corid, permetherin spray (kills the cooties) and eprinex for worming. All is stored in two handy plastic totes for emergencies. Better to have what you dont need than to need what you dont have.

Adorava---Kids are looking really good! Now I have the hatching itch real bad! And 2 new incuabtors from christmas just sitting here.....argh!

Thinking about Javas again. Those auburn ones are just gorgeous. I have got to stop looking or I am going to get myself in big trouble!
Thanks! We had more chicks hatch over the weekend, whites, so we will have alot of chicks to choose from come summer. Hopefully we get some nice show birds for my daughter to work with and tote around. BBS chicks are due to hatch this weekend, I can't wait for those to hatch. All of our BBS pullets have starting laying, so it will be fun to see the differences in the chicks. I have really fallen in love with the Blue,Black, and splash. I really don't know how long we will continue with the white silkies. I can't wait to give them all a bath!

2 incubators that are empty! That should be a crime.

It's funny, I actually haven't had the urge to fire up the incubator yet. I've been so busy and tired it's enough to do chores. I have about 8 dozen eggs on my counter waiting to be washed.
I think I'm going to hatch some out of my frizzle OE naked neck pen first when I get around to it just for fun.

GREAT advice with your last quote, there, pharmchickrnmom. Obviously, most of the Rx's you mentioned are OTC, but where did you get the veteramycin spray / ointment products?

Thx for your 2 cents!
