NY chicken lover!!!!

The dark coating on the Marans shell prevents normal evaporation of liquid. I dry hatch all my eggs. If you crack open the eggs that don't hatch, you will probaly see liquid moving around. When the fluid isn't evaporated enough, the chick will pip into the air cell & drown. I dry hatch all my eggs, & get much better hatch success in all the breeds.

I'll try that this next hatch and see how it goes. I did set them up in cartons this time but they still did not do well. Do you not add any water at all? I hate to admit to it but I did help one chick who seem to fill up the whole egg.

No that is not a typical egg. Any bird can have that happen and it is called a "fart" egg. That was the first time I've had one from my BLRW. I do breed them. I've gotten my birds from a few different breeders. I don't think they are as nice as what Sue bred, but I still think they are beautiful. I'm gradually improving as I breed. Here's some more pics.

I am not far from you. I am in Floyd. I might have one out of our group you might want. Mine are coming from Nava in Florida. I just wanted some nice friendly birds that looked like the breed. My little one loves the splash and the light blue the most. We will see what we get. Thanks for responding.Your birds are lovely too don't sell yourself short.

Nava is good and she has pretty birds. I think she used to chat on the old sharkie thread before they shut it down.

Hi everyone...

After consideration, we are going to invest in an automatic chicken door for the coop. There will be times when this will be invaluable and of benefit to our hens. I have heard mostly good things about them, particularly the Pullet Shut Door. I realize they are not cheap by a long shot, and am wondering where we might order a new one in order to save a few bucks.

Any advice?

Thanks a bunch!

I have auto doors on all three coops - I bought the chicken coop motor from ebay for about $80, a cheap timer from walmart and made the door myself. This is the one I use...

Hi featherz and thanks for the feedback.

Do you find your chickens caught on pretty quick to the auto door (timer), particularly the evening door-close time?

The hubby and I are going to look over everything and make a choice this week, so we'll have it in plenty of time.

My outdoor run has a hardware cloth bottom with compost on top of it; chickens shouldn't walk on wire full time. My pop door open onto the run. I have only closed the pop door 4 times in the entire 2 years I have had birds. It is low and the birds roost high...heat rises, cold air sinks....so I only close it when it is getting below zero at night. (My run also has a chicken wire top, so nothing can get in at night and nothing has gotten in, including small rodents.

I have seen Featherz set up and she needs her pop doors closed at night. I built my coop set up so I didn't have to open and close a pop door regularly; so you do have a choice.

I'm still dealing with the issue between Oscar, the roo, and Blondie, my BO hen. I've tried a couple "tests", seeing what happens if I separate her and him several different times. It is definitely HIM who is the problem. Even some of the other hens will pick on her if he's around. They do not if he is not around. She is to the point where if he is inside the coop at all, she hides with feathers all fluffed and growls. This morning, I booted him outside and closed the door. I finally coaxed her out and once she realized he wasn't there she calmed right down and ate and drank, even with the other roo fairly aggressively dancing for her. She was obviously not afraid of the other roo. She will not even go outside if he is out in the run. Poor girl.
He has one last chance. Today I will drag out the brooder to put in the garage. He will spend about a week in confinement. If when he goes back to the flock, he hasn't been knocked off his high horse, he will go. Otherwise he's a great roo. Very protective and always keeps an eye out. I'm hoping he can stay, but I won't put up with her being picked on. She's never been anything but sweet.

Is Oscar the Australorp ? Is Blondie a different color than the rest of your flock ?
As Lucky my Roo stopped picking on my white one for a while ..I have smacked him for it before ..

then I went to give them all treats when I got home today late & he nailed her good ..she actually cried out ...
I snatched her up & gave her treats separately ( I shared my Cinnamon gram cracker with her )

His old prejudice is coming out Again I think .
