NY chicken lover!!!!

Amy, I am sorry to hear about your faverolle.  It always stinks when they die.

Incubation starts today!!! YAY!!!  I have a brinsea advance. I started collecting my own buckeye eggs to fill the incubator.  Then when the purchased one did not show up, I kept collecting my hen's eggs. When the eggs showed up yesterday I had collect almost 2 dozen of my own.  I filled the brinsea  tray with 29 eggs. So now I have 18 eggs still sitting on the counter.  I checked out the new brinsea incubator and no I really do not want to spend $350 on a new incubator.  Then I check out what TSC has.  I figured "What the heck"?  My husband brought home a little giant incubator and the egg turner.  I will plug it in shortly and he will monitor it all day to make sure it maintains proper temp.  By tomorrow I will have about 50 buckeye eggs going!!!!Yippee!!

So, anybody out there have one of these litttle giants? How do you like it and does it maintain temperature?

I have to go to work.  I hate it when work gets in the way!!

I have a little giant, this is only my first time using tho. Right now I have 3 chicks that have hatched and 2 more almost there so I'd say it did pretty well. I started with 7 eggs and 2 weren't fertile. Once you get the temp set right mine stayed at 100 exactly! Humidity is a little difficult. The bottom has a water well but it's not nearly big enough. I'm happy with it though. I hope you enjoy yours :)

I found one of my Faverolles dead in the run tonight. I thought she was done for several times as a chick, and she's the one who had a prolapse last year, so she's never been a really robust hen. She hasn't been thriving over the last couple of weeks, and I was starting to think about culling her anyway, as I suspect that she had more internal issues developing, but it's still cruddy. The one who dislocated or broke her neck last year and had to be culled was also a Faverolle. I think they're adorable, but I'll never keep them again unless I keep them with banties or with just their own kind, as they're too submissive and delicate. I do have one left, and fortunately she's considerably bigger and tougher than the other two were, so at least she's fine.

Papa Captain Morgan is still keeping to himself, but is doing much better. He's eating and drinking normally, and can see out of one eye, and the swelling around the other is subsiding. Poor boy.

Alan told me the other night that one of his co-workers asked him about chicks, as he used to keep chickens as a kid and wants to get back into it with a dozen or so birds. I had him pass the word along that I can hook him up with some of the local chick pushers when he's ready.

I took a bird head count tonight, as I'd forgotten the exact number. I'm standing at thirty-four large fowl, two banties (which only count as one chicken), seven grown ducks and six duckehs-in-training. I'm avoiding TSC, as I'm afraid they'll have clearance ducklings I'll have to bring home.

Peeps local to me, the Town of Nassau is holding another small animal "tailgate" sale Saturday, April 27, from 9 AM until 2 PM at the Highway Department at 599 Central Nassau Road. This is why I love this dinky little town - anyplace that has a Farm and Agriculture Committee that encourages the sale of small livestock on town property is OK by me!

We also had some Fav's. They were also not as hardy as we need either. Would be great if someone took on the breed and really did some selective breeding to bring them back. Sorry about the loss.

I kept 5 of the 15 Khaki Campbells that I bought at TSC last week. They are great and crazy! Ducks are so fun! And messy. Have I mentioned that before?

I would LOVE to go to the tailgate. But, I can't go though because I have "Go Green Day" at Farnsworth Middle school in Guilderland. I will be promoting backyard chickens. Yup, second time to participate and it really is fun. I am working on getting the display ready. Proper housing and care, how long chickens live (I have 7 yr old hens) breed selection, etc. Anyone have any other ideas? Be sure to visit if you happen to be that way!

Sorry Hen about your favorelle.

I have a friend who just got chicks from TSC and next time I'm over I'm going to slip her a few extras from me.

She shouldn't notice until I'm long gone. He He He!

This sounds like something I might do, or have done, Cass.....

I went to TSC and got sucked into the baby craze! Came home with 6 Khaki Cambells.

Don't really know how that happened...
They'll have to get used to us, they are ever so skittish. I am used to silkie chicks flocking to me the second they see me. Are there any treats that they will especially like to make friends?

I bought some of those too, that are so stinking cute! I have 5, a friend took the rest.

Got down to the barn and found Miss Frizz dead in the nest box. She always overnighted in the box instead of the roost. It looked like her neck was broke and when I went to take her out her foot was partly stuck under the divider between the nest holes. There was a slight gap and she must have got her toes stuck then panicked.

I'm so sorry for your sweetie!
Hi, guys (and gals)! Can you all please vote for my chicken coop for the $500 reward along with 480 lbs. of chicken feed? Its the blue/green chicken coop with the door open and the chickens grazing in front of it. The entry is in the name of Mikayla J. To get to this, you will need to: go to your facebook account, type in Purina Poultry in the search box, find the post they made for the coop contest and click on it, then click "vote for me" and find my described coop. Thanks SO much!

Could you help a friend out. this is for Chickenperson. BYC member. If you have a FB account. I don't.

Thanks Rancher.
Will do after this post.
I figure the post master will get stuck on this job..he is probably on salary ..
USPS also uses UPS to ship the packages ..which adds to the banged up factor ..UPS then USPS more handling more box damage .
Some of the packages Ive got from UPS barely made it in 1 piece..
Most of my suppliers for my business use UPS and I have to say (knocking on wood) I have always had good luck. On time deliveries and in good condition.
One of the Marans decided to pop out!

He/she is resting now!
Yay!!! Congrats!

I have a LG I used for reptile eggs, which is an EXACT science. You need to keep perfect temp within .5 degree or so and perfect humidity or else they will not hatch. Several batches of eggs hatched just right with no losses.

Henicillan, I'm so sorry for your hen, too.

I picked up Eprinex yesterday and took care of that last night. It all went smoothly and quickly. On the calendar for 2 weeks again. Hope they get some relief quickly.

My one roo came after me yesterday (SunnySide, Buddy's brother!). Oscar was going after Blondie again, so I was shooing him away with my foot and stomping at him. Rooster Cogburn decided he didn't like that and came at me from behind/the side. Hit my leg. Didn't do any damage. I'm not even sure if he tried to hurt me, but he sure looked mad! I shoved him with my foot and stomped after him. He didn't try again. I can tell you, I won't be turning my back on him again though! I know he was protecting the flock, but I won't put up with that. He has NEVER shown an ounce of aggressiveness before.

Mine are sticky also, must be the lack of fan. I just wiped them down with warm water and put them back in to dry.
I also have a hovabator with fan and turner. I like it much better than the LG. I would like to buy a fan to install on the LG. DH also built an incubator from an old dorm size frig we call the frigabator that holds 90 eggs. When we are setting a lot of eggs we will do staggered hatches incubating in the frigabator then hatching in the hovabator.

Update on the new chickies: All five have hatched and are in the brooder. 2 Marans, 2 columbian rocks ( I think) and 1 black Orp. All are very active and loud so far. Yay!!!

I am sorry for your loss. I know these things can be hard. I do want to ask, what other breed do you have your Faverolles with? I have two frizzles Frenchy and Buckwheat in with my Dels and she does fine. I don't think either is laying much if at all, but they seem to survive. They do sleep in the nest boxes, but since they are favored I let them.

My point being? I can stick just about anyone in with my Dels and they do ok. There also is an EE in there and she's doing ok too. I stick a young pullet in there and they just do ok.

There's nothing wrong with the LG. You just have to get your own system going. All the rules are not so hard and fast as I thought in the beginning. Even the article I give out is off a little when it comes to Marans eggs. I would never have known if not for BYC. This hatch has the humidity 10% lower than I normally run. We shall see if it's helps.

Seriously? $350. Just my OP which of course everyone knows I give freely, ( along with chicks too sometimes). If you buy an LG and fill it with 42 eggs and get a 50% hatch that's not too bad.

Seems to me unless you're operating a farm and really need 42 chicks or whatever, spending $350 is just crazy. Heck I'll give you all the chicks you want for $350. Including BM's that Green fire sells for $49 a chick!

If you follow the instructions as closely as you can you should do fine with the LG. Lots of folks here have them and I have no doubt they've got some good advice.
