NY chicken lover!!!!

How about Chicken Mythbusting? Come up with a few common misconceptions about chickens and then debunk them. "Myth: Hens need a rooster around to lay eggs. Busted: You only need a rooster if you want your eggs to be fertile because you plan to hatch chicks. Otherwise, a girls' club is perfectly fine!"

I'm still interested in a couple of goat kids, by the way. I've already informed Alan that there will be four-legged additions this year.

at some point we are going to get goats as well. They will be our 1st mammal livestock in 22 years. We raised a steer once. My grandfather raised pigs on this land and I've ften considered getting a couple of them as well. Goats 1st

. But them after Narragassett turkeys. Those I want 1st!

Hello everyone, hope everyone had a good day!!! Good news today, I introduced my little sebright that had been rejected to my mixed roo that was also rejected and they seemed to get along great! Good thing I'm working on another small coop right now.
This is just the beginning. Chicken collectors anonymous. Definitely contagious.
Thanks!

My does are due April, kids will be ready in 8-12 weeks. Nigerian dwarf x Pygmy or registered Nigerians. Very sweet temperaments and great milkers of very rich milk.

When DH and I done with all this moving around and finally have a place of own to settle down to, I want goats. What do you do with the milk?? Do you sell it? Use it at home?

I know a lady that has over 80 goats. She makes her own cheese, yogurt, soap you name it she can make it. I've heard goat milk is excellent for cooking. It's much thicker than cows milk more like a heavy cream.

If that day ever does come and we get some goats, I want to make sure to get a breed that can in return, produce something for us. I know a woman who has a little less than a dozen and when I asked her reasoning for raising them (thinking she would say we use the milk) she said they're just pets. If I'm going to be paying more $$$ for another animal, especially a "farm animal" it better be worth my while. LOL

agreed. My pets are my cats. And one of them kills weasels for me. Outdoor animals are not my pets.

Annie I doubt I'll be ready this year, but one never knows

Evening all! Snowflakes are falling and sticking to the ground..grrrrr. I was hoping this mess would be gone. Crazy day at work but I came home to a banner egg day! Almost 19! Woot! Baking day tomorrow so I will have plenty to bake with Candled my other bator tonight. Pulled 2 clear heritage rir eggs and 2 are questionable so as of right now I have a dozen growing. Oh. the 4 silkie eggs in there are developing as well. Seems Little Man has been doing his job and I shall have some nice bearded blue silkie chicks hatching out!

Cabbage was only 7 cents a pound so the cheeps will get cabbage for treats tomorrow. I have some carrots to cook up as well and I saved the fat from the burgers I made so they will eat very well tomorrow.

I wish I had more land so I could get some more critters. The duckies are sooo cute. And the goats. And I want more chickens. Gah.....I am driving myself crazy!!! Have to work on the brooder cage tomorrow. They will be here before I know it.

Hen---you crack me up. I like the way you inform your husband. I have to talk mine into stuff.

Rancher--did dw discover your reloaded incubator yet?

One of the reasons my husband and I can't agree on my wanting to add ducks to my flock is over the fact that he want a "real dog". So he kept saying to me, you can get ducks when I get a real dog! (we have a dachshund) So I kept telling him, we have a dog, we pay enough for vet bills, food, frontline, etc not to mention I will be the one letting it out, cleaning up after it, walking it, etc while YOU work! What is the difference if I were to rehome these three chickens and get three more chickens or 2-3 more ducks?!? Absolutely nothing! LOL So I win.

I heard such bad things about the LG, but the one we borrowed from a friend is performing well, so I just bought one of my own for a hatcher. Had to disassemble the turner completely and wash it because it went through the flood in a basement and it is turning nice and smooth. The reviews say the turner is a good one. It took a bit of fiddling around for a few days to get the temperature just right, but is now holding steady. Perhaps because it is sitting in the center of the house where the temperature is steady and there are no drafts. We will be candling on Sunday to see if anything is developing on day 7. Figure if it lasts a year and something hatches it has paid for itself considering the cost of chicks and shipping.
LG...Little Giant. I had heard of "LG" else where and thought it was made by LG....like other electronics

!good luck!!

I have a little giant, this is only my first time using tho. Right now I have 3 chicks that have hatched and 2 more almost there so I'd say it did pretty well. I started with 7 eggs and 2 weren't fertile. Once you get the temp set right mine stayed at 100 exactly! Humidity is a little difficult. The bottom has a water well but it's not nearly big enough. I'm happy with it though. I hope you enjoy yours

Thank you! How did you monitor the humidity? TSC did not have a hygrometer(sp).
