NY chicken lover!!!!

Well, I guess I am the TSC official caregiver now. Went in tonight and they gave me another two chicks from the hospital tank. That makes five free birds. Lol I did discover that two that were given to me that I thought were amberlinks, I'm quite sure are cornish rock. Poor things. They have HUGE legs. I'm sure we will have to send them to be butchered after awhile just because they can't live in that "state". They are only 2 weeks old and already very large. I did some research on cornish rocks and it's not a pleasant life. Dh will eat them. We'll see if I'm able to when the time comes.
I got 2 tetra tints tonight free. Pullets. One has an open wound on the tail area and the other has had almost half it's wing chewed off. Not sure if that will ever grow back.
Rooster Cogburn behaved around me today and kept his distance.

Thank you! How did you monitor the humidity? TSC did not have a hygrometer(sp).
if in Pittsfield go to the petsmart, or whatever the petstore is in the plaza with Homegoods. Go to the reptile section and there are hygrometers there. Usually several types to chose from. I have used my LG several times and have liked it. It has done well for me.

i made the pound cake again, but this time I added 1 cup cocoa powder, and 1 cup chopped semi sweet chock chips. When it came out of the oven I poured 1/3 cup sambuka on the top, let it sit while it absorbed. I took it out of the pan and poured another 1/3 cup sambuka on the bottom and let that absorb. I took about another 1/3 cup Sambuka and drizzled on sides.Let cool. I put freshly ground white pepper on the top with some shaved chocolate and wrapped tightly for 2 days. YUMMY!!!

The other thing I found in the pet store was the red infrared reptile warmer bulbs from 50 watt to 250. I like those better because you can step down the heat if the brooder is small. Saves a lot of messing around to just reduce the bulb instead of moving the heat source up and down.

I have a little giant, this is only my first time using tho. Right now I have 3 chicks that have hatched and 2 more almost there so I'd say it did pretty well. I started with 7 eggs and 2 weren't fertile. Once you get the temp set right mine stayed at 100 exactly! Humidity is a little difficult. The bottom has a water well but it's not nearly big enough. I'm happy with it though. I hope you enjoy yours

the LITTLE GIANT is a good value and i have used mine many times, but anytime i have real valuable eggs i wouldn't trust them in anything but my R-COM 20 or R-COM 50. I first purchased a 20 and loved its reliability so much that i parted with 400 plus to buy a 50 also. The thing that sets them apart is the humidity control. As long as you keep the resevoir filled with water it holds perfect humidity. This is not a monitor that tells you humidity is low or high, it automatically does something about it. Anyway TSC has the little giant on sale as well as the turner that fits it for $75.00 each. As i said its a good value. Good luck, wish you great hatching success.

at some point we are going to get goats as well. They will be our 1st mammal livestock in 22 years. We raised a steer once. My grandfather raised pigs on this land and I've ften considered getting a couple of them as well. Goats 1st

Is this becoming the "NY Chicken/Duck Lover" thread?!? Alright, that's it I'm getting myself some ducks. I don't care what DH has to say about it either. I'm downsizing my flock back down to 5 chickens the first week of April so I'll have room for a couple of ducks.

Adora ~ Soooooo cute! After seeing HappyHen's ducklings I'm falling in love with that breed.

Question: How can I go about getting my two orpington hens and silkies to join forces and live under one coop? Right now I have two coops both of which can hold up to 6 bantams. I will eventually have only 3 silkies in coop and the two orps are in their own. And it's a pretty large coop for just the two of them. I would love it if I could get the 5 under one roof and use one of the coops (preferably the one that my orps are in because it's shaped like a big dog house) for these ducks I want in the near future. They all go out in the yard and free range together but I notice that the two orpingtons keep their distance from the silkies ever since I got my silkie roo from Adora and he has taken the "leader" role in the flock. Is this possible? Should I do it? Should I not?!?

And how much are these ducklings going for at TS if I do end up going there to get them and have to buy 6? I just hope I can find homes for at least 3 of them.
I was there today and clifton park store they were clearing out white pekins for $2.99 reg almost 5
