NY chicken lover!!!!

Playing catch up on BYC after a very busy weekend split between home and up in Ontario, Canada for a lake association meeting...

Ugh - such distressing news about the weasel and slaughter of your hens, ChickPrincess. So sorry to hear this.

Rancher, I loved the recent pic you posted with the little Del chicks. Wow, are they ever precious!

Our coop is really starting to take shape. I keep saying I will post pic's, but haven't done so yet. We worked on it for hours yesterday, and after I came inside frozen solid, hubby and my younger son worked another hour or so.

I just had to share this photo of a gorgeous Red Fox we saw up in Ontario on Saturday morning. He (or she) was being a "good fox" and just soaking up some sun near the lake. Hopefully, this one is not guilty of assaulting anyone's chickens. I realize as we're on a chicken lover's forum, this is NOT usually an animal you want to see (at least not near your coop)...but it was too lovely not to share, and we were psyched to have had such a close encounter with one in the wild.

Well, I guess I am the TSC official caregiver now. Went in tonight and they gave me another two chicks from the hospital tank. That makes five free birds. Lol I did discover that two that were given to me that I thought were amberlinks, I'm quite sure are cornish rock. Poor things. They have HUGE legs. I'm sure we will have to send them to be butchered after awhile just because they can't live in that "state". They are only 2 weeks old and already very large. I did some research on cornish rocks and it's not a pleasant life. Dh will eat them. We'll see if I'm able to when the time comes.
I got 2 tetra tints tonight free. Pullets. One has an open wound on the tail area and the other has had almost half it's wing chewed off. Not sure if that will ever grow back.
Rooster Cogburn behaved around me today and kept his distance.
SCORE ! 5 Free ! Totally cool ! I need to go To tsc & see if I can score again ! LOL

Hi all, just joined today, and find wowie! 1700+ pages of posts from NYer's. Needless to say I did not read them all

I saw several posters who live in my general vicinity. I'm near Oswego and Fulton. I would LOVE to hear how you all deal with our winter winds, (constant, cold, blustery lol) and have plenty of draft free ventilation for your coops? I am in the hunt for coop plans currently. I mentioned that same thing in my (long

) intro post also.

Our coop has house windows in it so in winter I leave the top window down an inch or so to allow breeze to come in but not blow on the birds. It does make a difference. Going out now to work on the goat pen, really didn't want to have to put up fence in the snow so I am going to hurry and try to do some tonight!

ACK!! Dang snow!

Welcome! I am in Mexico, not from you at all! As for help keeping the chickens warm, I'm still working on it myself. I had a couple get frostbite over the winter. I'm ready for spring!!!
