NY chicken lover!!!!

It's been a long day! Had a lot of catching up to do. The chickens had to stay cooped up today and they were very upset lol. I'm gonna go let them out in few for an hour or so. The weather turned out better than expected today, that's a relief! My bator is holding steady at 100 degrees, humidity is 35%. Hoping spring gets here soon!!

Lynzi--cute video of Duncan. How old is he? He sounds like he is still working on getting his manly voice! My Legolas does the same thing and then Little Man shames him by letting loose. Boys!

Silkies in lockdown and temp and humidity is holding. No action yet. Heritage and silkies in other bator go on lockdown thursday. Praying really hard for a good hatch in my new bators. I am impressed by both so far. Hoping for chicks on easter!

The beasties were restless today but it wasnt as warm as I had hoped it would be. Let them out a little while ago so they can fill up on whatever they find in the yard rather than the bucket of feed in the coop! They almost ran me over in their excitement of getting out. The uptick in egglaying is phenomenal and almost all the terrorist hens are laying and several of the divas are as well, just not as often. As for my silkie girls...half are sitting on eggs and the other younger half have yet to lay an egg.

Is there going to be any kind of a get together this year? I would go if there was something within a reasonable distance. Would love to put some faces to the names I see on here all the time.

Gotta go and make sure everyone is still in the yard. The divas are sneaky about going onto the neighbors lawn. The neighbors dont mind (they say) but I like to be a good neighbor and keep the destruction and mayhem to a minimum!

I have a group of 7 Sumatra hens I call the Diva's. And they also hang out all day long at the neighbors. Luckily the neighbors is mom's house and they enjoy them. They hang out with my 6 year old Blue Sumatra roo Loverboy. They are some of the hens born from "Mama's" brood of 15 from last year. Mama used to bring them over there daily. So it's their day time home to them.

here they are as adults and here they are as chicks with "Mama"

Thanks! I can't remember when Adora said his hatch date was, but I got him from her in the beginning of Sept last year and he wasn't crowing yet. So he may not even be quite a year old yet. Lucky for him he has no competition!

killed another weasel this morning. So far I'm getting them before they find my chickens. This one was too busy eating a mouse it killed to see it coming

Yay!!! Good for you!
We realized that our weasel was not a weasel. It was a mink. Dh read up online and discovered weasels are white this time of year. This one was brown/grayish black and larger than we'd expect a weasel to be. The one we killed was about the size of a ferret in the pet store (maybe a little smaller). Wish we would've known... dh would have skinned it (or is it "skun" it?).
Dh has also read up on a weasel/mink trap using a box and a rat snap trap. Just a wooden box, with only one 3" or so entrance on one side. On the other side, inside, the bait is placed. Inside the box, right next to the hole, the trap is set. Smell the bait and head into the hole but can't see the trap until it's too late. Also safe for animals we don't want to hurt.

not always white. My friend who traps purposely asked last time a month ago when I shot the last one if it was brown or white. As they can be either. But yes sounds like you killed a mink. Weasels prefer living food. I can't get a weasel to walk into a baited trap

I caught a weasel Saturday and it already has it's summer coat. It wiped out my entire grow out pen. It was a big male. Took me 3 days to get it but it is dead. I'm mounting it now with my uncle. The difference in a weasels summer coat and minks coat is minks only have a white chin and a weasel have an entire white stomach from chin to tail.
