NY chicken lover!!!!

Good morning fellow NYers! I'm officially in lockdown for my very first hatch! Cross your fingers that all 13 eggs in the bator hatch!!
good luck to you!!!!! =)

My babies are all running around like little bees this morning. Even my little runy 'assisted' hatch chick has little wing buds and is skittering around. No more splay leg either. woot!

Morning all! Chick number 6 hatched out this morning and the other 5 are enjoying the brooder, running around and then boom, fast asleep on the floor. I will whip out my good camera and get some pics of them today. It certainly pays to start with good lines and good breeding stock. Hoping for more babies when I get home from work today. My brinsea has paid off with this hatch. Next is the genesis, with more silkies and heritage rir chicks. Lockdown was last night for them.

blzzrdqueen--heres hoping you have a good hatch! It never gets old no matter how many times you see it.

Broodys are sticking on those eggs. Going to cook up a couple of cracked ones this morning and see if I can get them to eat. Sassy is so little that when she doesnt eat she gets me nervous because she gets so very thin. She and her sister Stripe lay side by side on those eggs. I will have to get pics of them as well. Of course, Rancher will have to wear his tinfoil hat and cover his eyes when I post them, being silkies and all!

Off to the Pharm today. I am sure it will be busy being a holiday weekend. At least the sun is shining!

Here is a video ..it shows about how far our chickens range ...farther than I liked this day .
Chickens will come when called if they know there is bread waiting for them .
Here we go ....Here Chickies

Lol, this reminds me of my two Orps when it comes time to locking up coops at night. I call them not knowing where the heck they are and they come running around from the front yard all the way up the hill to their coop. That was a really cute video!!

Stony, do you teach chicken math?

I think the very little ticks are the ones that are more likely to transmit Lyme Disease. You can take them off and put them in a Baggie and have them tested. I have done this for my dog. But my dog has gotten the Lyme Disease shot that they don't give to people. Doesn't that seem strange?
My dog had the lyme shot and still got lyme...then the vet wanted to give him the lyme shot again

Your doctor may have been uninformed-- MANY doctors are, sadly. I have chronic Lyme. Did they do any blood testing on your Daughter? How was she diagnosed with Lyme?
Yes, and she had it but we found the bullseye with the actual tick wound still there-relatively fresh. 3 weeks of antibiotics 4 years ago and no problems since.

Guinea hens eat ticks. Chickens, not so much. But they do eat a lot of other bugs.

According to the doctor Ray went to ( to have a embedded tick removed) it takes 24 hours of "feeding" for the tick to transmit the lyme disease to you...and it is done when the tick is done feeding and disengages, so it kinda spits into the open wound. That is why they say to check your entire body for ticks daily....so none goes unnoticed for 24+ hours. It is only the little deer ticks (about the size of a seasame seed) that is currently infected with lyme disease. (someone chime in it Misquitos have also been found to be infected. Since I no longer have kids in my care I am not totally current on the threats to their health) (and I am not worrying about my spelling, does it show? LOL)

To avoid ticks on your kids spray their lower pant legs with repellant with DEET in it. Not on the skin, please, DEET can be toxic to little humans. Tuck their pants in their socks and spray the lower leg. Ticks can't fly, they crawl up the leg to the warm parts of the body; groin, back of neck, armpits being favorite places, but not aren't really picky....ray's was in the middle of his chest. I am a tick magnet. You want your yard cleared of ticks, let me walk through it with bare legs and then we'll knock them into a can of kero to kill them. Reduce the population by half each time I walk through.

My experience with chicks and a rooster is that mellow roos are fine with chicks, and wild and rowdy roos wind up killed by momma. LOL Well, he messed with her babies and I found him dead on the floor a couple days later. Don't mess with the chicks. Didn't someone put up pictures last spring of their white rooster rounding up all the yellow chicks and keeping them warm?

Just what our doctor said.

Talking about predator deterrents ..a while back..
We got a new TV .....I put the box in the coop run to block cold air in the winter ..
sometimes it is facing in ..
sometimes it is facing out .
.I wondered if it is a predator deterrent ..
The woman in the coop LOL

She is pretty scary!

We can call ours in too, "Here chick, chick, chick" And they will come running, the big ones will "fly" about a foot off the ground for a few feet at a time. Like blimps flying!

heepie jeepies

Definitely.

I heard people that used it didnt like sand when wet it was hard to clean out ..Something like that ..
I use cheap stuff ..Hay , Leaves , Dried grass ( Love the smell of the grass when I am putting it in the coop all Winter ) So Sweet Smelling ..Really freshens it up !
Only thing I paid for it was my labor ..it dried on my lawn & I scooped it up & bagged it in garbage bags ( has to be totally dry )

My preference is at cleaning time when all is out to dust the entire floor, corners, nest boxes, everywhere with DE. I since the chickens will "dust" in the new shavings I also toss DE over the top of them too. I use Nobles since they have big chips and little saw dust. By the 50# bag its not to expensive. Even delivered to the house by mail. Might be more now that the demand is up. Keep it in a metal can to keep it dry.

Oh I also mix some in with the scratch as this keeps the moths away.

I wish you well.

Rancher
