NY chicken lover!!!!

Happy Easter All!

Just got back from Easter Brunch at the restaurant. That was delish! That's the only way I get to spend Easter with DH! Lol I'm ready for a nap after that meal.

Sorry to hear about the chick Jlaw, but like some others mentioned, it was probably best to put it to rest. It's in a better place now and no longer suffering.

Threw all of our hard boiled eggs out to the cheeps today, they're going to town out there!

Thanks for support guys/gals.
Quote: I raised blrws for years, and yes they are pretty, but they do not lay a lot of eggs, and the eggs are medium at best. I finally sold my flock last fall, so now I'm getting tons of requests for them....

Where did you have brunch, Lynzi? We usually go to the Marietta House; they do a spectacular job....SO GOOD. Today, we decided to stay home, but will probably go there for Mother's Day Brunch. By then, maybe it'll actually feel like spring! Glad you had a nice time.

Regarding run footing. I have dirt right now, hate it. I am going to order crusher run & fill it in about 3 inches deep. Why you ask?
Well, crusher run is usually made from lime stone, so it will help in odor control.
The pieces are too big for a chicken to eat, but small enough to pack down a little to make a somewhat solid pack.
because the chickens have dug holes in the ground, I need 3 inches to fill it in & stop puddles from forming from the roof runoff, so the chickes should stay cleaner, and ergo....the coop bedding should also stay cleaner.

Does the stone have edges that could cut their feet? probably, but chickens are constantly scratching around in dirt and I'm sure come across sharp objects,
They should still be able to scratch around a little, but once the stones settle down, it should be firmer.

Of course, I'm talking about my runs that have absolutely no grass in them. I might do the "pallet" method of growing some greens & put that down before the stones. I think one in each pen should last for a while and give the chickens their ration of green feed.

I don't why but I thought today would be a good day to completely clean the coop. I just finished and it started sprinkling! Guess I got done just in time. The chickens were free ranging the while time if course and they still are because I tried calling them in but I guess they want a shower cause they refused :/ Ham dinner pretty soon! Yum! This may be a stupid question but I wondered if it was ok to feed the chickens the dyed egg shells? The dye was non toxic but I'm still a little weary about it. We dyed 4 dozen eggs!

We ate upstairs at Dinosaur BBQ, my husband is the GM there so starting last year I started taking the kids to the brunch there since he has to work it and I don't travel home to CT to spend it with the family anymore. I like having the kids wake up here for Easter morning and we'll do an egg hunt when he gets home from work later. It was nice.

I had the same feeling but yesterday would have been a better day to do the full cleaning. I decided to wait until it warmed up a bit more to do the full cleaning. I'm aiming for sometime in May. I just went out today and gave the shavings a good mixing, threw a bunch of DE down and some scratch down and called it a day. The cheeps will have a nice surprise when they come back in.

I will end up doing something like this, eventually -- I'm sure. I have heard how chickens decimate the vegetation and ground within a short period of time. I'm still planning on having a sacrifice or "trade-off" pen, although it will be somewhat smaller than the actual pen.....I figure at the very least, I can give the everyday pen a good raking out once in a while and let it rest a bit while they use the secondary pen. I've heard pea gravel is good, Marq. Did you have any thoughts on the pea gravel for your run, to serve with drainage issues but also provide friendlier footing?

I used to eat at Dinosaur BBQ a lot when I worked at University Hospital. Yum...... Hope the rain stops for your kids' egg hunt. It's miserable today!
