NY chicken lover!!!!

Stony, np I'm glad you said it I was feeling it was about time to put her down wish I would have sooner. Just kept hoping she would get better.

Rancher, Thanks for offer. I may have to hit you up on ee's once I get these chicks out of house. Have a feeling wife may kill me though. As for how far I am from you I'm about 3 hours from you. I'm a hour south of buffalo on Lake Erie.

Marquisella, Thanks for info on how well the blows laid for you. Might put them on back burner for awhile think colored eggs are next on list to get if I can get them without the killing me. Even though she wants the colored eggs.

Man why does everyone else's silkies look so nice and mine are white ugly things at the moment. Just ain't fair lol. Don't worry rancher I won't link the nice looking ones.

But I will post my ugly birds lol.

I must confess I don't have time to deal with sickly chicks or chickens. Not good for them or me.  So the minute I see a problem I don't prolong either of our agony and put them down right away.  New born chicks are very fragile and pass on quickly.

I also do the need when needed. I just worry that by breeding sickly, weak animals it promotes poor genetics.

Sorry to have posted so much but if you don't know me I have something to say on everything.

Well not really but I can't put it all on one page.

So this is my final post for now.

COUNTRY MAX IS HAVEING A SALE ON BOSS AND CHICK STARTER.  If you're like me you stock up when you can.

I love the "multi post" function. Too much to say on lots of subjects

I don't why but I thought today would be a good day to completely clean the coop. I just finished and it started sprinkling! Guess I got done just in time. The chickens were free ranging the while time if course and they still are because I tried calling them in but I guess they want a shower cause they refused :/ Ham dinner pretty soon! Yum! This may be a stupid question but I wondered if it was ok to feed the chickens the dyed egg shells? The dye was non toxic but I'm still a little weary about it. We dyed 4 dozen eggs!

Cleaned out the chicken barn today. I am aching. 12 tractor buckets of poo. Ick. But now it is nice and clean. NPIP inspection tomorrow. Always gets me motivated to clean out in the spring.

We ate upstairs at Dinosaur BBQ, my husband is the GM there so starting last year I started taking the kids to the brunch there since he has to work it and I don't travel home to CT to spend it with the family anymore. I like having the kids wake up here for Easter morning and we'll do an egg hunt when he gets home from work later. It was nice.

DH and I have a gift card for there. What do you recommend??

I'm not a big fan of beef as far as parts of the pig goes, I will eat pulled pork from time to time but as a side, it's too much for me to get as a meal. I always get wings when I go. I do three wings and a side of mac n cheese and fries and its the perfect amount of food for me. I also like they're newer Reuben sandwich. I've been having DH bring me home one at least once a week. And I always get a glass of Paulie's sangria ;-)

jlaw...

So sorry about that little chick -- you shouldn't feel too badly, because you really gave her the benefit of the doubt and tried your best. To me, she appeared to be getting worse, rather than better. Sorry your kids had to experience that, as well, but it is probably a beneficial life lesson.

Glasshen...

I'm also sorry to hear about your Speckled Sussex. I know you were very fond of her.

Despite the cruddy weather today, the coop construction continues. Shingles were completed yesterday. Who knew I could be halfway decent with a hammer, and my 12-year old was right up there with me, laying those shingles down and banging away. Hubby has been wonderful and kind to devote so much time to a hobby that is not of his choosing or interest...

HAPPY EASTER, EVERYONE!

We do need pics. Please?

I reminded DH that I would be picking up my ducklings next week. His response? "We're getting them they're own housing" What!?! This coming from someone who didn't want them at all. I told him I plan to move the chickens in together under one coop when three get rehomed and he says No, they need a new house. Any recommendations on what I could use for 3 ducks?

We went up to my parents house for dinner today. I looked out their window at my uncle's farm yard and there was a raccoon strolling in front of the barn. It was broad daylight around 1pm. My aunt had told my grandma something was getting into her birds, now I know what. The thing was ballsy.

Quote: Pea gravel is too expensive and I think some pieces are small enough that they would eat it like grit. Besides, it is lighter, so they could scratch it around too much. At least it seems like it would to me.

I have 6 individual runs that are inside one enclosed area. Each run is about 4 by 20 ft. There is no grass, they decimated it in just a few weeks. I'm talking an area about 30 x 30ft. Its such a mud hole, stones are my only option. My other 2 bigger runs are probably 50 by 40 ft, and have grass, etc. still, but also have less chickens. They wreck about 10 ft from the coop door, then it spreads out & the grass keeps growing as it gets farther from the coop. Have to mow it a couple times a year. My other 3 coops share an area with electric poultry netting. I let them out every 3rd day. This area is a little bare next to the barn, but they go out further from the barn so its not bad & again, I have to mow where the grass still grows. So, depending on the number of chickens you have, they will make mud out of probably, 5 to 10 feet from the coop door, & then as it goes out further, they spread out & don't do too much damage, except dusting holes they like to make.

Saw a red fox yesterday out in the pasture....he is up here early. Usually I don't see him until May....must not be a lot of food back inn the woods this year.

I hope I made this clear....LOL I know in my head what I'm talking about, but not sure I explained it ok.
