NY chicken lover!!!!

Quote: I let my girls eat what they find to. They seem to not eat what they don't like ........earthworms they like so they proved as I was digging in the gardens lol

I have to believe that before processed food old time chickens ate whatever they could find & survived just fine.

But that's just my thoughts & opinion
Old time chickens didn't live long. They succumbed to starvation, parasites & predators.

Modern civilization has prolonged the lives of domesticated animals through good husbandry..

Wild animals do not live long lives. I'm not trying to argue here, I was just stating a fact that earth worms can give chickens "gape worms".
I'm not making it up, its a real parasite. You can use the information or discard it.

I have 6 year old hens that still lay. And the 6 year old Sumatra hens still lay 5 days a week. The RIR's that are that old maybe 3 days a week. I don't worm, I don't medicate, whenever possible I make them feed themselves as much as possible. Old time ways with good husbandry yield long lives. My flock has proven that to me. Chickens didn't used to live that long because in a true homestead or farm situation a hen that only lays 3 eggs a week is sunday dinner.
I'm not disputing that gape worms are real. but it certainly isn't something I will concern myself with

Congrats on the new job Rancher! Great feeling to start something new! Good luck on the new endeavor!

2 questions...when can I give my chicks my fat meal worms and is there a way to stop chicks from bullying each other without separating them? I only have one brooder...I could do another one but don't have room for another, nor another heat lamp...
a mama hen would feed them to them the 1st day they are off the nest. I've watched 2 day old broody chicks destroy and fight over an earthworm. More than once.

Yep, I did it. Got 6 chicks from Cortland TSC tonight. 2 Red Pullets, 2 Barred Rock, 2 Brown Leghorn. Hoping to pick up the ones from Tab this weekend if all goes as planned. The Barred Rock and Brown Leghorn were the 'special' breeds this week here. Had 2 tanks of Red Pullets, one of White Leghorn, one of ducks, one of cute little bantams. One tank had leftover Cornish Rock in one side, silkies on the other. The young guy was trying to talk me into silkies, so we had a nice discussion of silkies not being real chickens (thanks rancher!). At least he was knowledgeable and knew people used them for broodies more than anything.

The you tube mix does make it hard to figure out...Noah Hunt is a good singer
I'm venturing a guess here. You are much younger than I and just discovering the music I grew up with or listened to in my mid 20's. Guns and roses was a great studio band. I saw them live. It was like watching drunk 12 year olds play. It was terrible. In the mid 90's when G&R broke up Slash knew Axel was insane. I mean insane, not just a little nuts. So when Axel DEMANDED the rights to the name Guns and Roses Slash said...take it...I want to be DONE with you. Then Axel became a washed up wanna be. Slash formed Slash's Snakespit, then Velvet Revolver, now his own solo stuff. So here I'll disagree. Slash is one very talented guitar player who has made a very successful career playing really good music. Axel is a....well, this is a family forum....
