2. The meal worm thing looks like something I'd like to start, but perhaps I should be buying them?  What is their purpose?

3. I've never had a chick drown. The waterers are a safe design and unless the chick is drunk , it's not likely to fall in and drown.  I just keep the waterer away from where they sleep.  On one end of the brooder a ways away from the light.

I started my new job and have to work the next two days.  All I can say is , Wow!  

I still have 6 of your Marans eggs in the bator now. We will see how it goes. It seems to me that a higher humidity would be better since the shells are so thick. Wouldn't more moisture help soften the shell so they can get out? Though I'm not sure that is the problem, it could very well be the lines. Idk but we will figure this out! I want some Marans darn it! Lol. We must find someone with different lines and see what happens. I am on day 11 of incubation, half way there, only 2 eggs out of 41 were not fertile! Yay!

1. Hope the ee shape up and hatches.

2. The meal worms are a treat. I read of someone giving earth worms to chicks, but then someone warned that could get them sick and suggested meal worms. Also high in protein.

3. I have it just about as far from light I can food dish is actually farther. I have them in a 3-4 feet square box lamp in front right, water front left, food back left and that's just so I can getto water easier without spilling it.

i do meal worms because I like to up the protein on my young buckeyes, besides, it is an excellent way to train them to come to you because mealworms are their absolute favorite!!

I have been thinking about starting mealworms. You can buy them on eBay for 13.00 with free shipping. We bought some from a pet store for my daughters hedgehog but he wouldn't eat them so I fed them to my 3 week old chicks and they went crazy! Of course they are now 6 weeks and I feed them earthworms from the yard and they go just as crazy for those.

I have 6 (maybe more) fertile Bantam Ameraucana hatching eggs availble for $8, anyone want? I don't have room in my incubator and none of my silkies are broody, seems a shame to eat them. Hen is chocolate, Rooster is black (I don't know if he is a split yet or not) From Pips n Peeps line.

Located in Bloomfield NY or I can ship them if you want.

Has anyone every had issues with thick shelled eggs developing and not hatching?

Get some cornmeal and put some of that and the mealworms in a tupperware or disposable rubbermaid container with air holes...you can leave them on the counter for a REALLY LONG time as long as they have the cornmeal, and they will get bigger too...my daughter has mealwroms leftover from a science project a couple months ago that she feeds and we plan to feed them to our chicks when they get a bit bigger.

Don't forget a moisture supply.

I use oatmeal. If you ut in some potato peel for moisture you can safely leave them for a very long time.


Everybody's chicks look great! I have 25 eggs going into lockdown tomorrow then 25, 2 days after that!!!! YYiippee!! The first batch are the shipped buckeyes (plus 5 of my own) that took 5 days to get here.

You can use potato for the moisture, but watch it carefully for mold. Mold can kill your entire colony. I had the best luck with the prepackaged baby cut carrots. Instead of molding, they just dried out.

Yup, we have put all sorts of fruit and veggies in there and they love it! Our meal worms are huge! and we have some that are now beetles...that my daughter is hoping to get new mealworms from.

The beetles will lay eggs in the substrate. They are so tiny you can't see them, so don't throw away the substrate! Over the course of several weeks you will begin to see very tiny worms in the substrate. I would also suggest a screen cover for your tub. I got grain moths in my tubs and ended up having to throw everything away last year after a long battle trying to get rid of them.

Hi neighbor! Are you East or West? We own property in East Bloomfield.

Now I'm quite sure my Buff Orpington, Blondie is broody. Yay! I was hoping this would happen. She's also the one that the rooster has been mean to. (That's been better BTW). I wonder if her going broody had something to do with that? I'm not sure how to go about giving her eggs. The nest boxes are too high. Can I put a box on the floor on it's side in the back room of the coop? Would she automatically use it? I felt so bad taking the eggs away from her today. She had 6 under her that were nice and toasty warm.

Earthworms can give chickens "gape worms". They can cause a chicken to suffocate due to the worms that block their airways. Just a warning.
