I'd like the location -- practically living there right now while we're working on the Phantom of the Opera! However, the craft show & the car show are both affiliated with the school and/or teachers there, so I'm not sure they'd allow an outside organization to hold a function there. You'd actually have to contact the district office, not the highschool. Has anyone contacted TSC or Countrymax? I would think they'd benefit from something like a swap. I know the TSC in Dewitt has hosted 4-H fundraisers.

BTW... what color orps are you bringing back? I've already started hatching my lav & split orps.

DH and I candled our eggs last night.
18 of 21 possible BLRW are growing
8 of 8 OE/EE are growing
1 of 1 WCP growing
8 of 12 of our own birds are growing. I think 1 of those 8 may have a blood ring but I'm hoping that I'm wrong.

So far so good and I hope we're getting most of the kinks worked out of the new bator.

As a matter of fact I did.

So I stopped there to stock up before this big storm is supposed to get here and I talked to Cindy.
She says they'd love to have us. They have a big parking lot in the back and to contact her.

315-432-1640 or fax 315-432-1678 TSC 6641 Manlius Center Rd. E. Syracuse, NY 13057

They also are located conveniently off a main highway.

She sounded real excited to do so. Now I was thinking I'd contact the ALBC for some literature and set up a stand.

Now the OP whose Idea this was can make a list of those who'd like to be involved and contact us all at once with her ideas and details. It would be nice if everyone could co-operate with her since it was her idea.

TSC would be great since they'd be able to supply food and water for our birds. They have bathroom space too. There are restaurants nearby for people food too. I do know there is a street hotdog vendor in East Syracuse that might like to come and set up for the day.

Maybe tgrlily and trylin can lead in doing the "chicken" dance.

I was thinking that if everyone paid a "refundable" deposit to reserve a spot, we could guarantee their attendance. No since holding spaces for "no shows". Unless someone wanted to hire a DJ.

Anyhow Hope this works out.

Love ya

Rancher (I've already sent my Deposit for Lavender, buffs and blacks. Expect to pick them up in May and have offered to pick up for anyone else who wants to meet me to pick them up here )

If anyone is looking for chicks try this website.

www.natureberryfarm.com

They have a variety of breeds, but they don't ship. Pick up only. I like the sounds of this place. I've talked to them on the phone and they were very nice.

Yes, but I believe they are hatchery birds resold.

Not to sound like a chicken snob, but apparently I am, so.....

They order their chicks from a hatchery or hatcheries. They only offer eggs from Sumatras, Leghorns, comets, a comet/leghorn cross & some ducks which leads me to believe that these are all that they breed on site. You have to really look at their site to figure out what they actually breed -- not just order & raise the price on. As a small breeder, that bothers me... a LOT. Especially irritating is the attempt to fool the potential buyer that may think Nature Berry is selling Ameraucanas when they're actually selling easter eggers. I know most of the commercial hatcheries do that, but I do wish it would stop.

How can a small breeder compete with this? We work really hard to find the best quality breeding stock, keeping only the very best. My black orps that are in my Lavender Orpington breeding program are stunning & English style -- out of about 18 chicks in that initial purchase, I felt only 4 were "good enough" to breed. I paid a good dollar for our Dorking eggs, only to hatch 7 out of 36 because of shipping issues -- out of the 7, I only have 4. They're on the critical breeds list & I can't just give them away! For example, I can only afford to sell my cull chicks for $5. If I ordered 100 or so from Ideal for 2.50 each, I could sell them all that cheap.

Personally, I think we as breeders should be able to charge more that we do for our chicks. When we list them on craigslist, we shouldn't have to apologise for charging what they're worth. Some of us just in CNY are the only people in our area with particular breeds that are hard to find or hard to get non-hatchery stock... like our Dorkings & Rancher's Delawares. Yet, we're forced to charge less than we should because of local businesses selling them for so low that this is what the public expects.

Sorry for the rant!

I agree with tgrlily on a lot of this. One of my biggest peaves is when anybody sells Ameraucanas as "Americanas, Americaunas/Araucanas", etc. That is an instant red flag that they aren't quality breeders. If you want hatchery chicks it isn't a big deal.
