NY chicken lover!!!!

I have to agree with the previous two posts. While my current flock of 8 were chicks from Agway, I am planning on starting a flock of Javas this spring. Having read everything I can find on chickens and this breed and breeding in general, I have concluded that you get what you pay for. While there are a few hatcheries that off Java chicks and eggs, I decided that I would rather pay for quality hatching eggs/chicks from a well known, long term breeder of this chicken. It will cost me a small fortune, but at least I know I will be getting quality stock to work with. Most books and articles tell you that if you are serious about breeding, then start with the best foundation stock you can buy.

If I were just going to raise some replacements for what I have, I would get a free rooster and breed my eight girls. As with all things in life, you get what you pay for. Just my two cents.

I love you. I drove 5 hrs and seached all over the state for 5 birds. I don't breed my hatchery birds cuz they are clearly not pure. If I wanted Dorkings I had an offer from someone in NH but I would have to drive to get them and then they'd only be white. As for Garfield Museum expects in Javas I'd have to travel to get them.

Now just for your information. I'm driving to PA to pick up lavenders and buffs and blacks from Hinkjc. The lavenders are $20 per chick. I will not be selling eggs or chicks cheap. I'll cull them first! I feel Jody has some really nice stock.
As for tgrlily being a snob, perhaps but I do know she works very hard to breed decent birds whether Silkies or Dorkings.
I have had 8 breeds from hatcherys, you get what you get and like it!
As for Natureberry they serve a purpose but with the price of gas you'd probably be covering the shipping on hatchery chicks. I do know there are better Marans and BLRW in the state than hatchery.
As for my rosecomb bantam brwn leghorns, I can't find squat about them on line. They may be from Ruddy but I never heard of him til the ALBC conference.
Believe me folks I've tried to contact plenty of so called breeders and either they don't know how to use a computer or just don't care about furthering show birds. Which brings me to this, I have not seen a Dorking or Delaware at many shows. If there are any show people on this forum you better get the stick out before there are no more show people left. In the UK they are very concerned because folks are giving up and some shows have been discontinued. You'd think whoever is in charge of the shows here would compile a list of interested parties and send them an e-mail.

Take care I wish everyone here the best, even Silkie breeders

Travis, John is excellent to deal with. Get on his list as soon as you can, he fills up fast. I know his LF Black and Lavender Ameraucanas are sold out for the year. Not sure of the others.

Yes definitely order ASAP. He is usually sold out by the end of this month. I am getting lavenders and wheatens in March and have been on his list since last June! I want buffs and silvers also but I want to see what hatches from the eggs I just set. Just thinking about the buffs is making me weak in the clicker finger....I better go hide my credit card and checkbook.

Sorry everyone. Didn't mean to set off a bunch of tirades, especially about the ameraucanas. I know how touchy that topic is.
I didn't know these people bought and resold hatchery stock. It just looked like a pretty place with nice sounding people. Next time I'll know better and look at something closer before deciding to share.

Ahem...coughcough...I have been breeding blrws for 6 years, have a closed blrw flock since the start, and almost everyone I see advertising them has purchased from me. Blue hatchery, Jerry Foley, although they wont say so, to name a few. I also have Marans from Bev Davis Line. So yes, there are some of us in NY that have these breeds. I might as well throw in I have blue wheaten Ameraucanas as well. http://rarechickens.blogspot.com/

Tabs, you share anything you want to share with us! I am leaning towards the same thing, that they order a bunch of chicks, jack up the prices for resale. This is what I would have appreciated starting out...feedback from people with experience. The website isn't that obvious, and they are likely very nice people.

I didn't feel like I had enough information when buying my first Ameraucanas, I asked the breeder over and over again, "Now, these are true Ameraucanas, right? Not Easter Eggers? What are the colors?"...I was told they were black, blue, silver...on and on. I couldn't tell the difference as day old chicks, but when they were feathered out, you sure bet I knew the difference! All of them EE's. Ugh.

I bought a bunch of layers and various breeds last year from McMurray. I have sold all but just a few as I grew attached to them.

I wish I had hatched eggs from reputable breeders from the get go.

No need to apologise for anything! I wasn't trying to make you feel bad. I do know that some people don't mind hatchery stock.

When I was first starting out, I saw their ad on CL and got on their mailing list. I wanted all sorts of chickens in the beginning & didn't know a tenth of what I do now. I had no idea that they bought from a hatchery till much later. When I got their last email & looked at their 2011 list, I got really irritated. Yes, it does look like a pretty place with nice people. The chickens they actually raise are NPIP certified & that does make them sound more like actual breeders. Those nice people have a pretty good business plan as far as I can tell. Unfortunately it's bad for real breeders.

So... when I post chickens for sale on CL, I'll continue to attempt to educate & inform potential buyers about my poultry and breeding practices.

Rancher... since we'll be selling the same breed on the same road, we should probably think about setting a fair price together. That way we can work together rather than against each other. I'd also rather eat a Lav orp than sell it for next to nothing. I hear they taste like chicken!

Come on you know you want to split an order with me

I really would like some but I am not sure I can justify spending that much on a full 25. The other thing that we were considering is ordering the ones we want and then filling the rest of the order with "hatchery choice". Has anybody tried this? Did it work out good?

As soon as I saw your post about splitting an order I checked his website. If he had any lavenders left, I'd be all over it.
