I have to agree with the previous two posts. While my current flock of 8 were chicks from Agway, I am planning on starting a flock of Javas this spring. Having read everything I can find on chickens and this breed and breeding in general, I have concluded that you get what you pay for. While there are a few hatcheries that off Java chicks and eggs, I decided that I would rather pay for quality hatching eggs/chicks from a well known, long term breeder of this chicken. It will cost me a small fortune, but at least I know I will be getting quality stock to work with. Most books and articles tell you that if you are serious about breeding, then start with the best foundation stock you can buy.
If I were just going to raise some replacements for what I have, I would get a free rooster and breed my eight girls. As with all things in life, you get what you pay for. Just my two cents.
