NY chicken lover!!!!

Well hmm how early do hens start to brawwk or roos try to crow? I was sitting here watching my chicks when I hear a sound almost like someone was strangling a crow or something. It happened for a sec scared all the chicks. They all just stood still like I did it. then a few min later hear the start of another strangled crow. They range from ages ( guessing here ) 4ish to 6ish weeks old. Good old ts some marked down some not when I bought them on march 22. Older ones would be silkies and the leghorn. youngers are the reds and the bantam.

It's a Ted Nugent saying. Whackem and Stackem.

As a kid decades before caller ID I would answer the phone "Joes pig farm" . Boy did my mother despise that

Ted Nugent would definitely know ALL about whacking 'em and stacking 'em!

Now folks FYI, today I opened the run door to toss some bread in and an EE, Lav orp, and CR hen all bolted past me into the run. Not wanting to chase them around to get them out I just left them in with the Dels. About 7 hens and two roosters. I just waited til night time to gather them and put them back in the flock they were with. No fighting or being beat up by the Dels. at all.

Can't wait to bring some home.....soon, Rancher, soon....!

it's kinda funny to read how all of that started for him. I read his book "Bloodtrails the truth about bowhunting" .and he tells the story. It was the early 70's and non stop touring with the Amboy Dukes was taking it's toll onhim and he actually collapsed on stage. So he took a year off to hunt and clense his mind and soul. He had at this point never killed anything with a bow. Only a gun. So he went to a rifle ranch in Michigan with some as he describes "fat lazy slob" as the hunting guide. The guide knew nothing about bow hunting. Nothing. They were hunting goats. It took Ted about 10 months to finally kill his 1st goat. At that point he looks at the "fat lazy slob" and says "we are really whacking and stacking them now". True story. That book as with all of Ted's books are a good honest read. If you are politically correct or easily insulted or simply don't have a sense of humor I suggest you don't read them as your head will explode

New cam color seems a bit off may be the lighting in house but here's some pics of my birdies. second pic and second to last pic I sprayed one chick to mark it as my sons. used that blu-kote the other day on it. silkies and leghorn are white my comp showing them yellowish but on here looks white while writeing this. anyone able to tell what type of grey bantam that is i'm guessing a d’Uccle of some sorts?

Gramma,

are you sure they are not turkey vultures?

Immature bald eagles will be dark brown, but will be mottled with more white feathers throughout as they mature.

Turkey Vultures are not real. Seriously, I thought someone was pulling my leg when I first heard the term "turkey vulture"

Ok. They are real, but I didn't believe it until I actually saw one sitting on a stump in a field, and man are they UUUUGLY. Ray, who told me about Turkey Vultures first, said that the way to tell a Vulture from a bird of prey is Vultures wings have a saw tooth look to them and birds of prey have smooth edged wings (except the last few feathers on some breeds) And I checked. He's right.

I understand some folks about adding a single bird to a flock, but it seems with the Dels they don't have any issues. Later that night I went in and there the three invaders were on the roost with the Dels. Just as though they belonged.

I must say one of the roosters is missing the end of his toe. I've been dunking it in peroxide for a few moments each night. He doesn't seem to be in any pain. I suspect it's Nick my first every rooster. I'll be setting more eggs today. I hope things turn out better this time around.

I haven't posted the extra Birchen Marans roosters on CL yet if anyone is interested. I doubt anyone will pay for them so they'll be free. I will take pics and post here.

I believe turkey vultures are scavegers, cleaning up dead things....................... not hunting live things. I could be wrong, but to this day I've never seen them "hunting ". They're the clean up crew !!
