NY chicken lover!!!!

I just went over to that thread and it does seem some people have some silkie hens for sale, however thats just too far for me to travel in one day. If it takes me 4hrs to get to CT I'm sure it takes just as long, if not longer to get to the LI area. Its too bad I wasn't searching for these two weeks ago when I DID have a trip to CT planned. I could have picked something up while I was down there. Owell, everything happens for a reason a guess!

The DNA sex testing experiment sounds interesting.

Lord have mercy I've seen silky chicks at the auctions go for $1.75 ea. While do not advocate buying chickens from auctions if you can quarantine them for a full thirty days you might do ok. Chickens sold at auction don't bring enough to cover the gas to get there and back so I don't go.

Anywho, I think you can find some closer to Syracuse.

Facts from a long time chicken owner (NOT ME):

ALL chicken babies are YELLOW

It takes a minimum of 12 eggs for a hen to go broody (her broody sat on 27 and hatched 9. Hmmm...wonder what went wrong?)

You can NEVER have 2 roosters in the same flock.

And my neighbor STILL believes this woman's advice regarding chickens and hatching eggs.

Must have read it on the internet...cause if it's on the net it has to be true

Evening all! I finally found my silkie boys a nice forever home and they went there today. Makes me happy. No more crowing in my basement in the am either until the babies get big enough.

Lynzi---too bad you are so far away. I have four blue silkie babies in the brooder right now. They are two weeks old.

My heritage rir chicks are also doing great and I am now sure that I have 3 hens and a roo. The one little girl is a big girl and she is quite assertive. I am making a point of handling them every day and am hoping they will get used to that.

All of this much needed rain has bought out the worms and my girls have been feasting. My lawn is finally greening up as well. Hoping for a nice weekend so I can clean the big coop out.

In this speak of broody hens I have eggs that I it into lockdown last night and I have a broody hen who is sitting on 4 eggs right now, I'm not sure if they are fertile. Should I slip a couple chicks under her after they hatch or should I take a couple eggs from the incubator and put them under her now?

I suggest you candle the eggs. The problem I have is not having a private place for them to hatch and raise them away from the other adults. It's much to cold outside so they have to be inside.

I don't really care if they go broody at this point. Egg sales are down and I can just give chicks that don't sell away or raise them out.

You could of course hatch sex links and dispose of the roo chicks immediately.

Barred or Cuckoo are pretty easy to sex with some accuracy.

And of course the Rhodebars, Welbars, and the like.

I could never make the 4hr trip there and back in one day. I dread doing it when I go to CT every other month or so to visit family. And driving that far with two kids under 7 in the car? Pffft! Not worth the aggravation! This is why I just paid $6.50 a chick and $40 to ship them from CT! LOL

Where are you located Pharm?? I just ordered babies, I'm looking for a hen or two now that I'm down to one silkie hen and will have to wait a while for these chicks that I ordered to start laying.

Has anyone caught on to how many chickens I'm going to be up to after this past year I kept saying No way will I ever have more than 5-6 chickens! ?? LOL I'll be up to 11 or if I can find one or two more hens - not including the ducklings that I should be getting a call about any day now!

That was a huge help thank you! A lot of questions I had were answered. I'm leaning toward putting a couple eggs under her to hatch...as much as i don't want to mess with the ones in the incubator I'm not overly attached to them and would rather have her hatch them herself...how can something be so exciting and terrifying at the same time? Haha thank you everyone for the help and input!
