I seen that one of the local stores, Lilley's Tack & Feed which is halfway between Cortland and Dryden, has ducklings in this week. Rouens and Khaki Campells and maybe flying mallards? It was on Craigslist. $4.25 each, if you don't want to wait any longer for duckehs.

Also seen a craigslist ad in the Binghamton "Free" section for a shed, might make a nice coop conversion.

I have a feeling this "minimum order" she's waiting to fill, was for the order as a whole, not just for one particular breed she was ordering. I'm not in a rush for the ducks, just stinks cuz when they asked me when I would like them I said the 2nd week of April, so I thought I would get them the 2nd week of April - not the 4th or the 1st of May. My chicks are here so they'll keep me busy the next week or so! Off to pick them up! Hope they all made it ok!

While delivering my newspapers this morning I passed someone who was throwing away 20 or so mason jars! Some of them are the extra large size with wide mouth! I thought I was going to have to come up with a new feeder for the 4 week old because they're emptying the current setup pretty quickly but this new mason jar is twice the size! Now I just need to rig up a new hanging net for it.

The small mouth ones I may paint for decoration!

OMG! did you get them? I can and wish I'd get such a find. I'll trade you chicks for them. How many you want?

So far they do seem to be drinking and they don't seem to be making puddles!!!!! YAY!!!! Didn't have a disposable pie tin, but had a cake pan... it's working.
I'm THINKING this is a Rouen? Any ideas?
The darker one behind the (maybe) Rouen, I am thinking is maybe a Swedish duck? She is the one with the multi-colored feet you can see in the above photo.

Word of advice from somebody fairly new... if you're getting the chickens intending to have eggs you may want to go with pullets (or more pullets than other or "straight run") in order to be more sure of having hens when they grow up. It's only about $1 or so more, and worth it rather than finding you have five or six roosters. I got my six chicks as pullets... I think MAYBE one is a boy, they are only seven weeks old now, so I am not 100% sure. You have to think that the "straight run" chicks are not a 50/50 shot since many of the females are removed from the mix to go into the "pullet" bin.
As far as a brooder box for chicks, it can be as simple as a plastic tote with something for traction on the bottom (wood shavings, sand, paper towels, etc.). And a heat source. Food and water and you're set to watch your chicks for hours.

If you think you'd like to hatch and have no problem disposing of rooster chicks, you might consider and auto sexed breed or keeping chickens that produce them. Like NH or RIR roosters and Delaware or Sussex hens. Either cross will produce males and females of different colors.
