NY chicken lover!!!!

Well I had the chicks outside today in the Silkie run while Pearl and Duncan free ranged a bit. They're back inside now and noisy as ever. Golden Star and Stella are in their coop taking a nap in the run or watching the sunset, not sure what they're doing but I've never seen them lay like that just staring out the front. It's almost as if they're discussing how great a day they had and what they plan to do tomorrow.just grabbed a quick pic of them, I'll post in a few. Duncan did NOT want to go back to the coop tonight. He was more interested in chasing the two bigger ladies around after being locked up the past couple of days with Pearl. I hadn't let them all weekend with how windy it was and the hawks I saw flying around. If they're going to be out there I like to be out there with them. The other two are fine, they know where to take cover by now. Time to go upload these pics. I'll be back ;-)

Evening all! So many posts, so little time!

Pyxes---I use .25 cc for bantams and .5 cc for large fowl. I apply it topically on the backs of their necks down low. Works great for all kinds of things.

Rancher--sounds like you have some takers on all your babies. I too worry about being a chicken hoarder and have days where I force myself to get moving. I remind myself of those things when I see all those cute babies.

Hen---Love that speaking my language bit! One of the hazards of our profession...translating the unintelligable.

Lynzi---love the pic of the girls. They look like they were deep in conversation about the day.

Tab--glad you are feeling better.

Off to bed as it starts all over again tomorrow!

SunnySideUp, Glad Buddy's doing his job! Buddy's brother's have been naughty lately, and last week BOTH came after me at the same time. They each got a good swift kick (remnants of martial arts training! lol) and have kept a respectful distance since. They are both VERY good with the flock and I know they were just protecting the girls. But, they'll think twice about coming after me again.
Can you explain how to do ivermectin? Sorry, I keep reading threads about it and I'm not sure. Do you get the pour on or the injectable? What's the dose? I want to get it to worm my birds and kill the scaly leg mites the newcomers have. Do you throw out the eggs?
I use a "pipette" that I have from my lotion/soap business. It measures in ml, and I used .5 (POINT 5, NOT 5) for each bird, put on just like you word Frontline for a dog. I agree with the headlamp... best $12 invested. I use mine all the time and I couldn't picture treating them with the Ivermectin without it. It worked well (the headlamp and the Ivermectin).
Looks like a lady... good song
I have to agree with you.
To Clarify : LOL : I tried the VetRX for my chicken with the cold ..Maybe I am not doing it strong enough .
I have started her on some fish Penicillin . My Vet doesnt know anything about treating her ..if I could figure out a dosage I think he would sell me some Meds .
I did find this .
Birds - Amoxicillin

For susceptible infections:

1. For most species: 150-175 mg/kg PO once to twice daily (using 50 mg/ml suspension) <----this looks like a shot to me or in a liquid ? the rest is Greek to me

2. 100 mg/kg q8h PO

3. 100 mg/kg q8h, IM, SC, PO

4. Ratites: 15-22 mg/kg PO twice daily; in drinking water: 250 mg/gallon for 3-5 days
Did you use it warmed? Place the entire unopened bottle in a mug of hot water for a few minutes. It really makes a difference. I rubbed warmed RX into the wattles, comb, nostrils and wiped a couple drops into her beak. Also, rub a few drops under her wings. When they sleep they get the vapors. I used a latex glove so I didn't get slathered with it. It literally worked instantly for my hen. And it smells soooooo good.
The gate to my run didn't latch this afternoon, and most of my flock was wandering all over our yard today. Oh, my! Did they ever enjoy themselves! One hen was late coming back and when I put her in the coop the roos reprimanded her. I had to bring her in to clean up a bloody comb. She enjoyed her grapes in the kitchen afterwards. lol Syptic (sp?) powder is amazing stuff.
I do have to convince dh we will need to expand the coop again. We're up to 62 chickens. Two rooms, one 12x16 and the other 10x10, give or take. I need another whole room. Either that or reduce the flock and my egg customers will not be happy. I vote for the bigger coop.

I honestly think many impulse buy from TSC and CM.

I must be careful not to overcrowd.

Well take care,

Rancher
No offense taken, it was obvious that you are advocating for people loving their animals. In years past, I would oo and aah over the baby chicks at TSC, but I loved them enough to leave them at the store since I had nowhere to put them, and no clue about raising them. When I finally got my chickens this February it was after months of study (still have questions... but I learned the big, important things).
When we went to TSC a couple weeks ago, we saw a woman picking up six baby fluff little chicks. She had some kids with her that thought they were so cute and wanted to poke their fingers in the box. In her cart, she had a tiny feeder and that small, bitty container of chick food about the size of a cereal box. My husband advised her that it would be better to go ahead and get the big bag, since the chickens will only continue to eat more as they grew bigger, and I asked her about what she intended to do for heat and water. She sort of nodded to appease us and got away as quickly yet politely as possible. AND BOUGHT THE CHICKS.
I'm sure this is the sort of "impulse chick buying" that Rancher is opposed to; and I wonder what the fate is of those chicks. What that woman did makes me mad.

That's a pretty chicky hutch. And pretty chickens.

I had the ducklings out today in a play-pen in the yard. They had a pan of water and a bowl of food and they were so happy. Hopefully it is sunny tomorrow and I will do it again. If so, I'll get pictures. The chickens were getting to work at composting! They were digging and pecking in the poop-hay-veggie-scrap mix for hours.

I realized today after doing much reading online about chicken breeds and such and coming across many blogs in between researching that I am definitely not utilizing the scraps from my kitchen as well I should be. I mean, we'll toss out bread ends and left over eggs, toast, fruit out to the cheeps but never anything that has already spoiled. I always looked at it like, well I certainly wouldn't eat it so why would I feed it to my chickens?? I read online today that's its ok to toss food that has gone moldy or bad out to them such as fruits breads and other foods that are ok for chickens to eat. Is that right?? If it is I better start a compost pile this summer and leave it open to the chickens! Maybe I can go down from two trash cans a week to one!

Not sure but I'm looking into the compost with chickens thing and I'm curious about the spoiled foods.
