NY chicken lover!!!!

Ok those with the hoop coop set ups how often to you have to replace the tarps? Do you just have enclosed area for nest boxes mainly or a roosting area in there? I like the idea of them I just thought would be too cold or have to replace tarps every wind storm.

Jlaw

I have used the same tarp for two years. I have a layer of opaque plastic sheeting that degrades and I replace that every spring, just before the chicks get brooded out there(Get brooded is that right?) I have not used my hoop coop in the winter as I use it as a grow out pen and when the number shifts from live birds to frozen birds, I stop using it.

I picked up storage containers at walmart that I use as nest boxes in the hoop coops as the pullets come into lay.

I LOVE Winterlude, the ice sculptures are incredible. I try to get up there fairly regularly but since I've been trying to get my Citizenship I haven't been up there for awhile. I already applied for citizenship once and they denied me because I was outside the US 27 days longer than I'm allowed to be in a 5 year period of time (I went to University in Ottawa). So I haven't been able to go up there...I hope I can soon. My grandparets still live up there and I haven't been able to see them in over 6 months...
Westport is gorgeous, we used to have a cottage in Perth.

Yes, I love the sculptures, too, and it's a really lovely city. Just love all the old, grand architecture... Our kids love skating the canal. My son's French class has gone up the past 2 years for a one-day wonder trip, knocking around the city and a few hours at Jacques Cartier Park on the ice slides, etc.

Perth? Wow, small world. What lake were you on? We're in Perth several times over the summer, usually for an outing or a meal out.

I'm sure you miss your grandparents...that stinks that you were denied your citizenship last year. Maybe our government should devote more energy to keeping such close tabs on people who are actual risks...

Rancher---my rir and red sexlinks are laying without lighting. Down to a dozen a day from 2 dozen but still going strong. My market is growing so I am limiting everyone right now to keep up. Mostly word of mouth as we are staying under the radar from the powers that be. Oh==the eggs are getting bigger as the girls are maturing. Right now they are large moving to jumbo. Love all this snow melt and am hoping my paths out to the coops melt finally. Going to throw a bag of leaves in the big run. It will give the terrorists something to do. I am offering up my two blue silkie roos for sale to my fellow peeps here on the forum first. Gandolf and Elron came from breeder Geri Gordina. They are 6 months old and are developing nicely. Gandolf does have some gold leakage in his hackles but there is none of that in the line so we arent sure why this popped up. Feet are nicely feathered and they both have nice type and coloring. I would like to see them go together as they are bonded and get along well. PM me if you are interested. Here is a pic of both boys.
Does Geri Gordina have a website etc? I have heard the name mentioned other places. Looks like they produce nice silkies from what I have seen and read. Any help is much appreciated! =)

I have a group of 15 chickens (14 pullets and 1 roo) to add to my flock of 27 (26 hens and 1 full grown roo). The littles are 7 weeks old and have been on their own side of the coop, fenced away from the others for a week.
When can I combine the two flocks? The littles have been visible to the older flock for the week without problems.
I also got rid of my top roo tonight... the naughty one who kept attacking me, so things should be a bit calmer (including me!).
When is a good age? Are they ready now?

One of the Rouen ladies is broody. The little snot has commandeered one of the top-tier nest boxes, has piled all the shavings around herself and her booty, and is hissing like she's a demon from the depths of Hell when you touch her. I checked under her for chicken eggs, and, when I removed the two chook eggs, she bit me, the cheeky little wench. She has three duckeh eggs right now, and if she's still at it tomorrow I'll give her a couple more and let her go to town. I thought this one was going broody, as she's been hanging around in the coop most of the day and sitting quietly in corners on random eggs by herself for several days now. Of course she picks one of the most popular nest boxes for Serious Business, though.

I feel your pain. One of my broodies is in THE nest box. I pluck 5 - 7 eggs out from under her daily. She has stopped biting me because I hold her upside down when she does. (She raised a blood blister on my hand once and I said ENOUGH) Does a duck bite hurt like a chicken beak bite? I also wear gloves when I am working with the broody hens. I really really hate getting nipped by those sharp beaks.

It's more of a crunch than a pinch or nip. They have a lot of strength in their bills, and the edges are like tiny teeth. I'd rather be bitten by a duck than pecked by a broody hen, that's for certain!

I may go down to the coop and take a photo of the ridiculous thing. She has an adorable face, so her hissing like an evil little steam leak is hilarious.
