NY chicken lover!!!!

I love the birdsong in the morning just before dawn. I was able to sleep 8 straight hours and I've been able to breath since tuesday night.

One of my chickens ate lawn mushrooms last year and died shortly thereafter.. so they do get into stuff that's bad for them. =( Now I have to clean up all mushrooms just in case.

My broodies have gotten used to me getting eggs out. I finally gave the two broodies in the large coop two eggs a piece, but I just can't give the broody in my smallest coop anything - I feel bad for her, but there's NO more room in that coop AND the coop is very high off the ground with a steep ramp. Can't see how having chicks up there would be a good idea. =)

I hear my little CB cochin chicks upstairs crowing away. They need to go out side today or my DH will kill me. :)

I've given up on my original coop run idea and I'm just going to go get a cattle panel at TSC tomorrow morning.

Lol I was thinking same thing if I didn't have so much wood already. My next coop maybe a hoop coop but not 100% sure. I have no shade really and would probably try to use it year round.

So my wife keeps pestering me about meat birds. Does anyone here do like the or broilers from hatcheries? I just think it would cost a bit. Is there a breed that would grow fast that I could actually breed since from what I read the hatcheries birds ain't ment to be breed. Was thinking I could try some next year but if she keeps it up I maybe building another coop sooner than I thought.

Does Geri Gordina have a website etc? I have heard the name mentioned other places. Looks like they produce nice silkies from what I have seen and read. Any help is much appreciated! =)
: www.ObsessivelySilkie.com She has very nice birds. I am very happy with mine.

I have 4 blue silkie chicks up for grabs, straight run. Must go together. They are a month old and feathering out nicely. Pm me if you are interested. I am located in Ulster county.

Tab--glad to hear you got some rest and can breathe again.

So now that my heritage breed rirs are 4 weeks old, I think that I may have to revise my earlier statements about 3 hens and a roo to 3 roos and a hen! It looks like 2 are developing combs but I wont know for sure until they get a little older. Sigh. I have a knack for hatching out boys. If they are roos, then they will be up for sale too. I have to say they are feathering out very nicely and the type and coloring on these babies fits the sop. I am wondering if it will present problems if I introduce one of the roos to the terrorist group. It would be nice to have a backup roo for that group in case something happens to Olaf. Reds can be difficult when it comes to newbies. I guess I will have to wait and see how these babies grow out.

Off to work today. I am hoping its slow. I just want to stay home and do stuff here. Have to plant my blueberry bush today.

I have to say I like the taste of my rir. I know Ginny eats her buckeyes. Meat birds are eating, pooping machines. Personally I wont raise them. A good dual purpose bird, one who lays and is table food, is a good investment as you can breed and raise what you need. Stony does this all the time as well. Barred rocks are also supposed to be good eating but I havent eaten any of mine, yet.

One of the Rouen ladies is broody. The little snot has commandeered one of the top-tier nest boxes, has piled all the shavings around herself and her booty, and is hissing like she's a demon from the depths of Hell when you touch her. I checked under her for chicken eggs, and, when I removed the two chook eggs, she bit me, the cheeky little wench. She has three duckeh eggs right now, and if she's still at it tomorrow I'll give her a couple more and let her go to town. I thought this one was going broody, as she's been hanging around in the coop most of the day and sitting quietly in corners on random eggs by herself for several days now. Of course she picks one of the most popular nest boxes for Serious Business, though.

amen to that. Extra roosters are delicious. My wife and I ate a mutt Sumatra/something LF earlier in the week. Not a large bird by any means. Cooked in a crock with vegies over potatoes it fed the 2 of us for 2 nights. And as Mr. Food used to say .....
