NY chicken lover!!!!

Anyone?
I was hoping on letting them out this morning, but not sure if I should. The original flock is already out today. Are the 7 week olds too young yet?

Well now I don't really know, but I have had this experience last time. I had some roosters out there and they jumped a couple of the little girls and I had to put them down as they broke bones on the poor things. These were Orpington roosters. Mario and Luigi. Not nice boys. I swear I heard Rap music coming from their side of the coop one night.

Now I do have some BM's in with my Dels and two Del roosters and they're both about 8-9 wks old but the Dels roos don't bother them.

Lynzi,
That does help, actually. I think I will try this afternoon for a little while. There's only the one rooster out there and there's 26 hens to keep him occupied.

Yikes! Those roos would go QUICKLY from my flock. Poor things! I hope he would be okay. The first day they were out there he tried to show them treats and call to them through the fence. I'm hoping he just takes them under his wing, so to speak.
Keeping my fingers crossed!

Roosters are like men, not all are created equal. Some are better than others and some are just useless.

Mine have also done this. When we bought the farm there was junk every where from the previous tenants. I pick it up whenever I see it and the chickens always seem to scratch up more.
I can't find the original post regarding blue foam insulation....I remember that someone's chickens did that. Not good. I have several poisonous plants around here and they peck and peck and drop the pieces on the ground. I have had one chicken just drop dead for no reason....so maybe she ate something she shouldn't have, but the other 20+ are in the same yard and not eating things that will kill them. I do step on any mushrooms I find around and squish them as far into the ground as I can....cuz even tho I am of the opinion that chickens won't eat something that will kill them, why tempt the fates by leaving something around that even humans get confused as to what is good and what is bad?

So the original question is "Is Ivy poisonous to chickens"? Hope someone knows, because not all chickens are as smart as mine. LOL

Just found 26 eggs UNDER The coop. All D'uccle eggs. Scrambled them up for the flock. Good choice on my part because 3 of them were rotten. Now that I know where they are laying I can check there every day. I hope they start to lay in the coop when I move them all around in prep for the new chickies.

I have more broody hens than a person can use. 3 of them are sharing the same clutch of eggs. It's kinda cute until bedtime, then they ALL want to be in the nest box at the same time and a lot of clucking ensues. I guess I am going to be forced to make a safe place for the original broody and her babies, that will start hatching Tuesday or Wednesday. I plan to shove chicks under the other two when I get them. No sense running a light when I have willing mommas in the house.

As far as meat birds, why don't you research which 2 breeds are crossed to make them (Cornish X's I think) and get a few of those birds and the correct roo and make your own meat birds, if she insists on raising those stinky things. Personally I am in the dual purpose bird camp, but I am only feeding 2 people so even if it is a small roo, it still is enough for a meal with chicken salad for lunch the next day. I was pretty amazed how much meat those scrawny things actually have on them.

Lol I was thinking same thing if I didn't have so much wood already. My next coop maybe a hoop coop but not 100% sure. I have no shade really and would probably try to use it year round.

So my wife keeps pestering me about meat birds. Does anyone here do like the or broilers from hatcheries? I just think it would cost a bit. Is there a breed that would grow fast that I could actually breed since from what I read the hatcheries birds ain't ment to be breed. Was thinking I could try some next year but if she keeps it up I maybe building another coop sooner than I thought.

Last spring I hatched . EE's, Australorps, Speckled Sussex & Blue Laced Red Wyandottes all the roos were enrolled in freezer camp by the age of 8-9 months & ALL were very tasty. The Australorps & BLRW were heaviest, dressing out at 5lbs +. Which is more than enough for me. Not sure how big your family is.

I've got plenty of broodies. What I've been doing is dividing the eggs among them. Only thing is you gotta watch for hatches and take the chicks so the stay on the rest of the eggs. Marans eggs of course are a pain to candle, but the others aren't so bad.

Here's the latest Momma but I did fine another under a hen this AM and put it in the brooder with three others.
