NY chicken lover!!!!

So...anyone have a broody hen they'd like to sell? I bought a bunch of eggs for my broody buff orp and then broke her accidentally - by changing the bedding in the coop! The one time I want a broody, and she breaks that easily, ugh. So now I have 27 eggs with nowhere to go. I was gonna hatch some of them by myself anyway, but 27 is a little much, lol. I wish I could convince my silkie that she wants to be broody.

Has anybody tried this??
It's a video on scrambling eggs IN THE SHELL! So you can hard boil your extra eggs and toss em out for your flock....it's a bit time consuming but a pretty cool trick!!!

Hey everyone!

Bad news: my apple bins never came today so I didn't get to start creating a new coop.

Good news: Stella is NOT broody and I got two new hens today!!!!

Evening all. Crazy day at work today. I think it was national freak day cause they were all in trying to get all their stuff early. You would think my grey hair would alert them to the fact that I wasnt born yesterday.

Came home to the tater tots playing in the playpen. I call the babies tater tots. Dh put them outside today while he was working cutting down more trees. Its for my silkie area.

I think he just wants them moved from view in front of the house but thats okay cause I have plans for all that space he is clearing! Moving the two coops there and hopefully a grow out house and a nice large fenced in run for all of them! The "real" chickens already have their house and run in a nice spot.

The terrorists have dug craters by our foundation out back with their dustbathing so we are going to have to get some dirt and fill it in. They have a huge one under their coop and dh want to get some sand and fill it in. It certainly explains the sawing and hammering I was hearing under there. They were building ladders so they could get in and out of the dust hole.

Rancher---sounds like you had gangsters from the hood at your house. I have rednecks, who are just as bad. Oh--good luck on the interview.

Hoping tomorrow is nice as I must get out and clean up and pick up the yard and plant my blueberry bush. I like the idea of a swap shop. Eggs for plants, manure for chicks, etc. We should make a point of doing stuff like that since we are all like minded people. I am sure we all have stuff we dont need that we could swap for stuff we do need. Sorry rancher---you arent getting my yarn. I am hooked on crocheting (no pun intended) so I will keep mine.

Ta for now.

So took chicks out side all day today. Can chickens get sun burned? Seems top of head by comb is kinda red or maybe comb is just starting to turn red. They hid in shade most day, my kids wasn't too happy. Feed them some grapes and they decided they wanted to eat the tomato from yesterday.

As for trying to breed the Cornish X rocks, I tried googling and people are saying the birds are really like 4 breeds in set order to produce the correct growth rate. But no one knows the breeds ect. I think I'll just find some good duel purpose birds.

Oh also how do you find out if there is any auctions around you? I've only lived here about 5 years and don't do much besides work and home I don't get out much and haven't ever seen them in paper or on the walls at grocery stores. Just seems like something the kids might like to go and see.

There is an auction every Wednesday in Springville on rt39. That's where I get my veggies and flowers in the spring. They also auction animals in the afternoon. Great place and lots to see

I have broodies but none to sell. All are sitting on so many eggs if they all hatched I'd have 50 chicks easy. I keep taking them as they hatch. With the exception of Bluebell and hers. I did stick the newest chick in with her and I think she would have taken it, but it's three days younger and hers are doing well.

I have to laugh that we fret about the temp and here is Bluebell and hers out from under doing their thing.

I always laugh at the temp thing. Here is a pic taken Christmas day. If I recall it was about 20 degrees and a bit breezy.

Well I do have lots to plant. Someone sent me Jostaberry cuttings. Eleven I think. Plus I have a Black currant I bought. It's doing better in the plastic baggie it's in than the Red ones i have in the ground. I think I need to work in some of that horse manure.

Crochet? Have you been involved in our swaps? I didn't get in on the lastest. Wish I had.

My birds have dug dusting pits next to the septic tank. It keep the ground warm and dry even during the winter. It's not very deep and uncovered since we had to have it pumped.
