NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all, actually afternoon all? Wow I can't believe it's 1 already. Taking a break inside after nearly passing out from mowing the lawn. I feel like such an idiot, we have about an acre but all hill (we're at the bottom of a mountain). I had the bright idea of pushing this mower up and down the hill, keeping all the cuttings blowing in the center so I could take it up when I was done. Too long to bag for the amount of grass. Tried doing one half of the lawn in one shot until I finally had to stop and run inside for some water, felt like I ran 5 miles that's out of shape I am. Called my husband to come home, finally got hydrated and took a cold shower and told him I'm ok, that he could stay at work but he's still coming home I guess. He'll do the rest. I'll be resting on the porch doing research on riding mowers, I think this weekend will be devoted to picking one out and purchasing cuz we can't keep pushing this thing up this hill.

Rancher can't wait to see pics of the pullets TOB got from you!

Good luck with that, can't to see what you get! I live at the top of my hill my front yard is flat it's my backyard that goes down the steepest part of the slop I've decided will be over grown this year and I will move around it. but the rest of my backyard is flat it's wierd but it works.

I had thought to host a picnic again this year, but I think it would be a bit much for me this year. I have too much going on and moving will become more cumbersome for me as summer progresses.

Well now don't over do it and for sure don't let your condition keep you from coming if there is one. We can put you in a wheel barrow and push you around.

AND if we get my daughter to come we can put her in one too and have races.

I had considered it but in this area it has to be early spring like now so the skeeters don't eat you alive.

Now if anyone considers hosting a picnic don't worry cuz we all bring something, so you only need to provide the tables and chairs, just the basics. Last year there was plenty of food.

I've got a big screened in pavilion with a projector screen for a slide show, two patio heaters and a bit of property for a bonfire and parking. What would it entail if I were to break it to my Hubby I was interested in hosting!?!?! May need to put a tip jar out to pay for a porta potty tho!?! We're on a well....and septic~ Ha

oo ! Nook, you should do it! I am close enough to you that I could go. Cass is usually involved in the planning so maybe she will know how many. I went to the one at Annie's house and it had a decent turnout. Not sure how many people tho? I remember we had some not show due to weather.

About 20 people. Most never used the facilities because of the heat. Can always put up a sign that says "if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down" (that's what my Aunt did....wasn't worried about septic but well water supply running low cuz people were staying over at her house too)

I would LOVE to come see your birds and you. Some of us bring tables. Most everyone brought their own chair. You get to pick the date. Previously the host family has organized the food sign up list and I have taken care of the Auction sign up list. (I still have tickets for the auction, btw) Even if you don't want me to organize the auction sign up I will bring the tickets to save someone some money. Last year people who got there before me had the tables set up and bags already labeled for items they brought. EVERYONE and I mean all who attended helped. Everyone was friendly, cooperative and helpful.

Each of the last 2 years the auction has raised about $110 bucks, which is given to the host family to offset any costs they incur. If you volunteer I am sure that Tab will offer some hints to make things easier and Annie too, if she is around at any time. (Pretty sure Annie will say, "don't have it the day before a hurricane" LOL)

We started each get together between 12 and 1. Most people were gone by 5 and I left last (both times, what's with that??? LOL) before 6. The grounds were cleaned up, all garbage bagged and all food inside the house. All the host family had to do was return things to their proper place in their own yard.

Whoever has the gathering gets to make the rules about animals on their property. Annie and Tab both said "in cages/boxes only". (Don't blame them and no one failed to comply)

See above post for most of your answers. But I would like to elaborate on the "auction", as I call it. It's actually a Chinese auction. Everyone tends to bring things for the auction, but it isn't required to attend. The last 2 years we sold tickets priced at 10 for $5 and 25 for $10. All monies raised from the auction are given to the host family to do with as they see fit. (both years it was over $100) Last year there were quite a few children and someone(s) suggested that an auction aimed at the children might raise a little more money and be fun for the kids that attended (and were VERY well behaved, btw). If children are attending this year, we could go with that idea and have a separate table for the kids items. I would suggest that we price the children's tickets slightly lower and publish the price in advance so the older ones can earn the money they want to spend at the auction. (Am thinking 10 for $2 and 25 for $5 and having the tickets a different color.)

Some of the items that were brought last year (that I remember) were a 6 pack of Amber Ale and opener, a lot of wonderful gift baskets with assortments of items, a wine gift basket that had so many tickets in the bag I couldn't find the bottom of the bag, hatching eggs, chicks and a couple of trios of started birds. Oh and Glasshen brought some beautiful stained glass items. (I didn't win any of them...boo, hiss) It seemed to me that every family won at least one item and the host family is totally allowed to purchase tickets and win items. I know, seems kinda silly for the host family to pay for tickets, but it keeps it fair for those who ARE buying tickets and the host family gets a 100% refund on their purchase.

There are two previous hosts and Tab enjoyed doing it so much she would do it again this year, except for that whole being pregnant in the summer thing she has going on. (and anyone's who's ever been pregnant in the summer totally understands )

I can't host due to land constraints but will gladly help in any way a host needs help. (as long as it isn't in mid august cuz I am on vacation 8/17-24)
