The thunderstorm knocked a tree in my neighbors yard over across the road and onto the power lines last night. Hence no power and I hide upstairs with an air conditioner to sleep because of my odd work hours. The heat and humidity were aweful. Last week we had trouble with keeping the LG's temp steady with the odd changes in weather even with the fan DH installed. The temp had spiked and I think the eggs were cooked. Not a single one hatched. Miss E one of my first birds that we've had for the past 3 yrs and got as an adult was dead when I got down to the barn for chores. Tonight is the closing preK program at 6:30 so that means maybe 5 hrs of sleep if I'm lucky. I can't wait for the weekend.

Every job needs supervisors. They look attentive, wonder if they will be able to build the next one themselves?

Now that would be nice! LOL I swear nothing bothers these girls, between the thunderstorm they were out in last night, the drill I've been using, the hammering, sawing, I don't think anything would scare them away. The ducklings seem to be enjoying their pen while I work on the coop. I'm waiting for my son to get out of school so we can stop at the hardware store on the way home for some locks, maybe some paint, and I should be able to finish and get this thing in the yard before I start work again at 5.

Tab - sorry to hear of all the trouble the storm caused you. Sounds like you got it worse than we did. I'm actually surprised there were trees down in our yard when we woke up this morning. That was the worst one we've had since moving here a year ago. Sorry to hear of all the eggs you were hatching and the loss of your hen. :-(

Thanks. It's just been one of those days and I'm tired. My grandmother was admitted to the hospital for her legs having an infection that wasn't responding to oral antibiotics today too. She has had problems with her legs for quite a few years. I think they say her legs are ulcerated and she can't have salt.

I am sorry for your trouble.

Too bad you aren't closer. DW would surely take the girls for a while. Only woman I know that will drive 10 miles for a good night kiss from her granddaughter.

Yesterday I got a good video of the tornado cloud that was trying hard to form over DeWitt.



Also, should I continue incubating a single fertile egg since the others either have already quit or should I abandon the hatch? What would some more experienced hatchers do?

I hope the weather is good this weekend, I really need to get the platforms for my coop finished so I can start on the outdoor run.

Yup, that's what a forming tornado looks like. Scary. I think the green in the clouds gives it away.

How many chicks do you need? Is this egg under a broody? If so, let the one hatch. It won't be a problem since the momma will raise it. If you are using an incubator, abandon the hatch because having ONE chick is very noisy and just as time consuming as raising 10.

I don't get updates, I just go by the little red icon on the thread title when I come to the site or if on my phone the star next to my subscriptions will be blue.


Finished the duck house (well sort of) I'm going to get another crate to expand the run part. It's not really that big when the door to the coop is down. It's fine for the ducklings for now but once they're bigger one of them will always have to be on the door. It's either that or I take the door completely off and let them have their choice of sleeping in the run or coop at night?! I have latches connecting the run to the coop so I cannot seperate. I don't think anything is getting in there with how well the wiring is fixed on there. Only predators we have around here have been raccoons and we haven't had any since we started leaving the porch light on at night.
