Rancher why do you put cans and milk jugs over your plants is it just when it is freezing that you put them over or are you using them for some other reason? Never saw that before I do have a neighbor who uses beer 12 pack boxes to cover her plants if it is going to be freezing at night.

If you start early they create a mini greenhouse. Keeps the soil and plants warm. The cans being metal heat the soil and keep it warm. Night time temps can be not quite freezing but cold enough to kill a tomato plant.

The cans also make for easy watering. You just fill the can as needed and you've saved water and kept it around the plant where it's needed. No water sprayed all around means less weeds.

I think the people selling the Amish made sheds etc are NOT Amish. The Amish have strict rules, and they use a non Amish person to sell their wares. They also Have their children working with them supposedly learning their trade. Mennonite folks dress similarly but they are permitted to sell their products...the people at the Regional Market with the baked goods are Mennonite.

Different cultures but probably the people who are doing the objectionable postings, and snotty it's too small a job for us responses are from our own culture.

There are several sects of Amish plus Mennonites, who look Amishish but are far more liberal. Sometimes they live side by side. The Amish do use their "English" friends to help them sell their wares, but more and more Amish are learning our "English" ways so they can make a living. The Amish are shrewd businessmen/women. I am sure that some of them have learned how to use a computer, at the library, and are posting their own ads. I am equally sure that some English person is taking credit for Amish workmanship and selling the sheds for more than you would pay if you got it direct from an Amish businessman. They can use modern technology (in the more liberal sects) but can't OWN it. (They often pay someone to drive them places they need to go, but never own a car; have phone numbers to the pay phone by the end of their driveway with outside bell, etc.)

I have an Amish Shed company local to me without one single Amish person living anywhere near me....so I suspect one of two things...the owners buy the sheds from the Amish somewhere and transport them or they are lying about who made the sheds. Either is possible.

Once I thought I wanted to be Amish, until I learned how hard they work to ensure there is a roof over their head and food on their table. Then I turned on the A/C and took a nap until the urge to convert passed.

Morning all. This heat and humidity is killing me. II think I got too dehydrated at work yesterday as my legs cramped up real bad last night. Thank goodness dh took care of all the cheeps because I just couldnt. Starting off my morning with lots of water. I will probably be hauling lots of water to the cheeps today as well as they drank lots yesterday.

I am having dh put down the one silkie chick today. All my efforts to rehab her are not working. I suspect she got pecked on the head by one of the rir chicks when they were in the playpen together and has neurological dammage. She drags her one leg and has balance issues now and just isnt moving all that much. I gave her two weeks of rest and vitamins and such but to no avail. She only recovered up to the point she is at now and its no life for a chicken. I dont trust myself to do the deed quickly and cleanly so dh gets the job. One of the tougher aspects of having critters.

Going to put the rir tots in the diva coop tonight after dark. Trying to integrate them again with the girls. If Betty gives them a hard time, I may just go ahead and put her in freezer camp. She is psychotic anyways, not laying and killed any eggs I put under her last year when she went broody, right when they were due to hatch. She is at the bottom of the pecking order.

It seems the chipmunks have outwitted my dh. They no longer run the back yard and the stone wall in the back yard but are out front now, where he cant shoot at them. I told him thats what he gets for shooting off all the dumb ones. So far they are staying out of the coops.

The upcoming rir boys thought they would like to try taking a piece of flesh out of my hands yesterday. Imaginge their surprise when I pecked them on their head and then yanked them out of the brooder box and held them upside down under my arm. Message was received loud and clear. I reached in again later and they behaved themselves. I am hoping they are nice roos when they finish growing up. Uncle Bill (the largest one) is going to be a very big boy I think.

Day off today and my feet can use it. My backyard poultry magazine came so its a good excuse to sit and read for a while. Stay cool everyone.

Sorry to hear about your chick. Relax today and get some rest! Enjoy your day off!

Yes I agree, don't think they're exactly "Amish", just more using the name. LOL

Unfortunately the Agriculture business has tanked so the Amish and the like have had to move into the "cottage industry" to survive and support their families. Also unfortunately their culture is being invaded by the outside world. There is a documentary about it. I bought a book on the Amish a long time ago and it's sad to see some of the changes.

Humans are humans no matter where you go people are all the same. Subjected to the same temptations and sins. I base my judgements on individuals not entire groups of people. Point being I'm not persuaded by the beards and straw hats. Vanity, covetousness, greed and selfishness are not unique among specific groups of people.

That's why I try to be nice to everyone. Cuz I understand how difficult the less talked about sins can be to deal with. I don't always succeed but I try.

Pharm I'm sorry about your chick. Nothing in the books prepare us for the hard stuff does it?

Morning Everyone,
Sooooooo glad it's Friday!!!! Even tho this week was a short one it felt like it was never going to end, especially with how stressed out I've been. Seems as tho we WILL have to move but not until next next year sometime around August or so. I'm bummed. I really like it out here. Just hoping we can find something like it further south in NY or in Northwestern CT. Of course family is excited. I'd be back to having a babysitter again (my parents), and my best friend is super excited too. I plan on doing everything in my power to this "farm" of everything we have with us too! I really want to buy this time around since move will last a while this time. No more of this two years here, three years there business.

Anywho, both my silkies from Marq are laying now. I got another egg this morning I'm assuming from the splash. Placed that one under Stella. She's up to three now. I think at this rate the eggs under her are going to have a better hatch rate than this incubator. I don't know why but the temps keep rising in this one I bought even tho I keep turning it down. It's been at a steady 101/102 but the other day it went up to almost 107-108 and I think it might have roasted them. Still have 3 with veins I can see but I haven't seen any more development than I did on day 5. In one of the pictures to that link of egg development it showed a black dot for the eye on Day 5 I believe? I still don't see that and it's Day 6. So if I don's see that by the weekend or anymore development for that matter, I doubt any of these things will hatch. Just seems to be the same since that first day I candled, nothing much has changed. :-/

Why people think an Amish person is anymore righteous than non Amish is beyond me. Though I wonder if I dressed the part if people would buy my eggs. People can be so gullible.

I go to the regional market here and folks are going ga, ga over the little old man and his wife selling egg for $2.50 and $3.00 a doz. What they don't know is the "commercial" farm they own is the same one that sells eggs to the school I volunteer at and their paying more for the same eggs the stores are selling for less.

In addition to the care package from Lynzi containing some Silkie chicks for you, Rancher, we will include some overalls and a little straw hat. You will have to work on the beard yourself.

Then get ready for some real business!

CASS - good luck with the duck eggs! At least you caught your mistake. Maybe if you hadn't "whined", you wouldn't have done so!

PHARMCHICK - sorry about the chick not recovering from its problem. These things always make me feel sad, but I know they happen enough that I'll have to deal with something or other myself...

Have a good day everyone. Stay cool -- as much as possibly, anyway!

I would give it more time for sure. I know when I was looking at mine I was getting worried constantly and I still had 9 out of the 13 hatch and it would have been 10 if the Orpington could have actually gotten out of its shell :(

I definitely plan on keeping them in there. Just isn't looking too promising LOL I even thought about taking the eggs and placing them under my broody but now that she has some and the bator has some, I'd like to see which has the better hatch rate. Especially with this being her first time. She looks like a big turkey out there when she does come out in the evenings, puffing out her feathers at all the other chickens. LOL It's kinda funny. I hope she makes a good mama if these do hatch.
