NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning Everyone,
Sooooooo glad it's Friday!!!! Even tho this week was a short one it felt like it was never going to end, especially with how stressed out I've been. Seems as tho we WILL have to move but not until next next year sometime around August or so. I'm bummed. I really like it out here. Just hoping we can find something like it further south in NY or in Northwestern CT. Of course family is excited. I'd be back to having a babysitter again (my parents), and my best friend is super excited too. I plan on doing everything in my power to this "farm" of everything we have with us too! I really want to buy this time around since move will last a while this time. No more of this two years here, three years there business.

Anywho, both my silkies from Marq are laying now. I got another egg this morning I'm assuming from the splash. Placed that one under Stella. She's up to three now. I think at this rate the eggs under her are going to have a better hatch rate than this incubator. I don't know why but the temps keep rising in this one I bought even tho I keep turning it down. It's been at a steady 101/102 but the other day it went up to almost 107-108 and I think it might have roasted them. Still have 3 with veins I can see but I haven't seen any more development than I did on day 5. In one of the pictures to that link of egg development it showed a black dot for the eye on Day 5 I believe? I still don't see that and it's Day 6. So if I don's see that by the weekend or anymore development for that matter, I doubt any of these things will hatch. Just seems to be the same since that first day I candled, nothing much has changed. :-/

I would check the incubator out ...If the temp keeps rising ..It either has a faulty thermostat or there is a air leak some where & it is not sealed .
Or consider returning it to the place you bought it ..Do you have your receipt still ?

I am having dh put down the one silkie chick today. All my efforts to rehab her are not working. I suspect she got pecked on the head by one of the rir chicks when they were in the playpen together and has neurological dammage. She drags her one leg and has balance issues now and just isnt moving all that much. I gave her two weeks of rest and vitamins and such but to no avail. She only recovered up to the point she is at now and its no life for a chicken. I dont trust myself to do the deed quickly and cleanly so dh gets the job. One of the tougher aspects of having critters.
Sorry to hear about you having to put a chick down. I put my second chick I've had to put down the other day this time I tried it a little different. I gassed it using baking soda and vinager. Took big Tupperware container and put a smaller one in there, loaded smaller one up with baking soda then put chick in the big one also. Then added the vinager and closed lid on big Tupperware container. Looked like it passed out then just like 1-3 seconds of death spasam and was done. It cost more than taking heads off but it was easier on me and I was able to do in the house. I thought of making a bigger container out of a drum and putting a screen in bottom of chicken wire so I can dumb all in and seal the top and have bigger chickens put down this way. Only problem I see using this method is making sure you have enough baking soda and vinager to actually kill the chick and not have it suffer sitting in there.

I think the people selling the Amish made sheds etc are NOT Amish. The Amish have strict rules, and they use a non Amish person to sell their wares. They also Have their children working with them supposedly learning their trade. Mennonite folks dress similarly but they are permitted to sell their products...the people at the Regional Market with the baked goods are Mennonite.

Different cultures but probably the people who are doing the objectionable postings, and snotty it's too small a job for us responses are from our own culture.
I have numerous Amish neighbors and they do sell their wares bake goods, eggs, firewood, buildings, and services such as painting but none of them are snotty or rude they are the most polite people I have ever dealt with they will bend over backwards to help you so Glasshen is I am sure right the snotty responses are from our culture not the Amish.

What have you got? The only breed I have that hasn't gone broody are the Columbian rocks.
I have only had my hens a few weeks so I am just being impatient I am sure they will go broody they just aren't going fast enough for me LOL
Surgery on your shoulder? I had that more than 20 yrs ago and now my shoulder is hurting again. I refuse to call the doc. I just rest it as best I can. Last time was really bad.
Are you saying the surgery was really bad or your shoulder? I am so hoping the doctor is exaggerating about the pain after the surgery cause I just don't do well with Narcotic pain meds so can't take any of them.

If you start early they create a mini greenhouse. Keeps the soil and plants warm. The cans being metal heat the soil and keep it warm. Night time temps can be not quite freezing but cold enough to kill a tomato plant.

The cans also make for easy watering. You just fill the can as needed and you've saved water and kept it around the plant where it's needed. No water sprayed all around means less weeds.
I will have to try this for now on never heard of it but it sure would have saved me lots of time and lots of plants.
