NY chicken lover!!!!

12 original eggs from Brahmapapa... he was very generous in just giving them to me. 6 hatched. 3 non-fertile, 1 not hatched yet. Duck eggs still have a week til hatching. I can't wait. Since a broody is doing the hatching for me, I am hoping for 100% hatching of the 4 eggs. Once they hatch, I am going to put the latest chick hatch back in the coop with the ducks....with their momma....My coop is so crowded they are starting to pluck feathers from each other. Not good. Have to downsize as soon as I can determine gender of the new chicks.

Ray says the chick situation confuses him. I don't see the problem. 4 chicks are left from the Grade school hatch. They are under the table in the coop. 2 chicks of the exact same size as the 4 under the table are running around with their momma. 3 chicks a week younger are running around with a momma that is a twin to the 2 chick's momma. 6 newly hatched chicks are in a box he has no clue where it came from or how it got into the coop with one of the 3 lavender Ameruacana hens. And there is still one bird sitting on eggs. Clear to me what is what. Right?

Featherz, what did you decide to do about your momma mourning the loss of her chick?. When I came home today one of the newly hatched chicks was out running around with the 2 week olds. It couldn't keep up, but is was out of the coop and running around out doors, so I think a newly hatched chick will be able to deal with being out under a hen.

I thought I put all Pekin/Runner mix eggs under my BO but it is looking more and more like 1 mix and 2 pure Runners. I'll know soon enough I suppose !

Aren't they just adorable? There is just something about ducklings

YES, they are! Very much so!

I watched a Mallard hen and her 6 duckings at a beaver pond yesterday...very sweet.

Hello every one hope every ones doing good I just have a few questions what would be a good insulation for my hen house .what is preening . And how would I post pics of my chickens so can share with every one thanks have a good night every one

My Brahmapapa eggs are due tomorrow. There are nine left - two got cracked by their stupid mother, and the third disappeared (spirited away? broken and eaten? who knows). Mrs. Beasley has been found a couple of times sitting on other eggs instead of them at night, so they may be slow, but their growth all looked good when I checked a few days ago, so we shall see.

Also, I was notified this evening via email that my turkey poults were shipped today.

They're coming from Indiana. I hope they come tomorrow, because I'm off - otherwise I'll have to arrange to go into work late Thursday. It'll be worth it, though.

From what I've gathered from everyone else, insulating a coop is not always a good idea. Chickens produce a lot of heat so insulation in the summer can be very harmful and insulation in the winter can lead to frost bite if there isn't enough ventilation.

Preening is what a chicken does to clean it's feathers. Takes its beak and kinda runs it thru a feather to the edge. If that makes sense.

To upload pics from your computer there is a little button in above the message box you type in to post, looks like a picture of a mountain and sun I think? Click on that, choose browse and open the picture where it's saved to your PC, click upload and viola!

The ducks are so cute but the photograph is outstanding. I just love it. Thanks for sharing!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks! Just an average camera and googles Picasa to crop and such. It's all the ducks, the natural posers they are

Ohhh ok I see. I only asked because I'm noticing one of my ducks has a more yellowish/greenish bill where the other two are more brown. Was wondering if it was indication it was a drake or not. Ducks are winning me over big time. I don't know why I didn't start with them. And they're so much more fun to hold than chickens. LOL
A female will have a lighter bill.

Yes they are more fun than chickens. Constant entertainment , with the right breeds great egg layers and ducks play pretty much all day long . Sumatra's will always be my main chicken but in the future we will have more ducks and less LF chickens. Ok, at least no more LF chickens

People better start posting pics of their chicks soon!!! I keep reading and reading but seeing no pictures, c'mon people! Lol J/K I've seen a few.

Babies are doing good with mama bun. She isn't showing any signs of abandoning them. She definitely fed them today because they were nice and plump!

Eggs are still developing nicely! My daughter is so into these eggs now. She runs over the minute she sees me grab them to candle them. Today we actually saw some movement in them and that got her really excited. We go into the kids bathroom because that room has no windows so its really dark making it even easier to candle them. Every time we go in there she whispers to me "check that one mom! Look at that! Oooh did you see that? That ones looking good!" It's so cute. I'm like you should whisper more often. The house would be a LOT quieter!

Hope everyone expected hatches are successful ones!

Tab - I'm jealous of your "you time" this morning. One more year for me before that happens!

Rancher how is that little lonely chick doing?

No insulation needed. Their feathers keep them toasty warm. Mine are in a hoop coop covered with canvas. All they need is a draft free house with good ventilation and to be kept dry.

We get snow and temps during the winter that can & does get in the single digits with wind chills below zero.

Under my pic is a link to my coop if ur interested in the set up. Everyone here is very friendly &
